OK, a new rank level has been added for those of you who think 5000 isn't enough...

Very cool.... I need to check out what a Chief Quartermaster is. Is that higher than Master Chief Petty Office of the Navy.... didn't that on have three stars over the insignia?

Gosh...it took me about five years to earn the PO1 insignia for my Naval Air uniform, back in the 60's...Hope it doesn't take that long here...

Bob H,
Yeah...I joined the Naval Air Reserve in 62, right after I found out the draft board wanted to provide free transportation to South-East Asia and let me carry around an M16... ![]() I was trained as an aircraft mechanic - and spent my 'tour' of 6 years flying around in old Neptune SP2E's looking for submarines on weekends, once a month, out of Alameda NAS in the SF Bay Area - fun stuff... Sometimes, when the weather was calm, we'd soar up to Tahoe and check for Russkie Sub's, but never found any... ![]() Our old SP2E's had two large radial engines and two small jet turbines needed for extra thrust to get off the ground...I used to sit on a jump seat and lean out the engines on long flights, and even get in some 'stick time' when the skipper wanted to take a nap... ![]() There was a special aircraft repair facility at Alameda during that era, and I can remember looking over a couple of Neptune's that had been stripped down, with all the heavy electronics removed along with the jet engines...they then installed some hi-tech ground avoidance radar, along with three Gatling Guns...they were pained a matte black color and were to be used during night raids on enemy convoys in Nam...I later heard they had some 'teething' problems with the radar, and gave up on the project as night raiders... I was aboard during the six-day war in Israel, but our squadron wasn't called up, as the regular navy's sub chasers didn't need our help finding all those Egyptian submarines... ![]() I was a 1st class radial engine mech when my tour was up - a dying 'breed' by that time, but it was fun to get my hands dirty working on those birds, once in a while... ![]() Military service isn't for everyone, but I think over-all it's a great experience, and great character builder for many young people... ![]() Ray...aka: X-Ray, when in the USNAR, as I was able to 'see' into some of our engine's insides to diagnose a problem (most of the time)...had to change it to 'MexRay' in the early 70's when we started traveling to Mazatlan... ![]() Probably more than you wanted to know... ![]()

Ray, I just saw this response from you. Fantastic stuff. I have always thought that my days in the Navy saved me from personal doom... hanging with the wrong crowd, etc. during my later teen's. The Navy turned my butt around and showed me how to decipline myself and do the right thing.... teamwork!
Dang, I will need 250 posts before I can reach 2nd class petty officer! ![]() I spent many days in the Navy in the Radio Shack, got out as 2nd class RM after almost 4 years. 1968 to 1972. Great duty! ![]() |

Yeah but at least today they have women onboard. I still have a hard time even trying to imagine how they make that work on extended deployments...

Man, it was great reading through this thread again. It brought up more memories of my days in the Navy. While stationed on the USS Inchon, LPH-12, helicopter carrier... after Thanksgiving dinner, we would have turkey sandwiches every night after hours, until the turkey's had to be tossed over the fantail! I remember 30 or 40 turkeys going over the fantail! Along with a huge number roast beefs. I always though, what a waste, but I guess they had to make sure they had enough food for everyone on board. 550 Sailors and over 1,500 Marines on that cruise. A whole lot of food got tossed over that fantail!

Now you know why most of the chiefs had bellies hanging over their belts...

Damn and I am a retired SFC US Army, better get going. Whats a deck hand? My deck was the front end of an M-1 Tank. No matter what your choice in service was, I think we all did something that most people wouldn't have done, and I know we all did it well. I know over 44 years, I served my country for 26 of those years. 2 wars, 2 conflicts, I had a lot of good times and the bad times will go to the grave with me, but that being said, I think I have done okay
