Very true.

Did any of you guys in the Punta Banda area get to know them at all?

He wasn't a very happy man, it seemed. He publically, on the PBBB, offended a few people here , our favorite openly gay bartender on one occasion, and with that, finished his downhill slide.

He'll find what he's looking for elsewhere, hopefully.

WOW! Thanks for sharing. Living in a small (former soviet) developing country has been difficult but has afforded me enlightening personal growth, as well. In my goal of "helping others" I have helped myself the most.
Thank your friend, for me.

We're empty nesters with a big old house in Massachusetts who have been talking about downsizing for years. The real estate bust of 2008 put those plans on hold, but fortunately we're still a few years away from retiring and are seeing a recovery in the housing market. Instead of downsizing now and spending our last few working years in more modest quarters, however, we'll likely stay put until I retire. In the mean time, we've been poking around BCS, specifically the Todos Santos / Pescadero area trying to get a feel for what life might be like. We tend to cook most of our meals at home instead of going out, and found produce and fish to be abundant and inexpensive in Todos Santos, so we remain encouraged about the possibility.

It would be great if you could get an extended vacation time to come down and rent a house for a month or two. That would give you a great chance to get to know more about each area you are considering and see how it looks when you aren't a tourist...

My wife owns her own business and could basically work anywhere with an internet connection. You would think that I'd have this same option working for a high-tech company, but the culture doesn't support a remote work force. That said, I have an employee who recently spent 5 weeks in India - 2 working, and 3 vacationing with family. If I could talk my superiors into an arrangement like that, I'd be a very happy camper indeed.

In the mean time, I qualify for a 6-week paid sabbatical in another 5 years - assuming I make it that long.

I have just returned to the USA from teaching overseas in small former soviet countries. I've been back about six weeks and looking for a job here in San Diego and beginning to make my plans to move Baja-side by next year. It is good to be back home and I am looking forward to traveling south soon.

I met somebody years ago who was living up in the hills east of Rosarito that did just that. Came down here on a week vacation for a "time out" from a difficult relationship. He simply ended up staying, leaving his girlfriend with the apartment NOB and notified her via a "Dear Jane" email.

At first I thought he was just kidding but his buddy sitting next to him assured me that it was the truth. I asked him about his stuff that got left behind and if it wouldn't have been a better plan to go back, break up in person, collect all his possessions and then leave?

He said, "I can see that you never met my old girlfriend..."

Tell ya' what, we will always keep our place in baja..... my family says so!

However, we spent a year and a half in Nayarit and now we are close to a month in San Miguel de Allende.

Life is great and I really have no desire to ever move back NOB.

Challenging at times? For sure....

I will always rent here.... or anywhere for what that is worth... mobility is priceless and the inconveniences of not owning are small in comparison to being able to just pick up and really live in another part of this country for any given period..... we are planning on about 5 years here and then, quien sabe, here or somewhere else... I just signed a two year lease on a very nice house.

I want to make it to Brazil to live but I will raise my kids first in Mexico.
This country, with all it's glaring flaws, is bad-ass.

There's something to be said about renting instead of buying. In the U.S., owning one's home is considered the American Dream, but by the time I'm able to live in Baja I will be in my late 50s or early 60s. Is there really any advantage to ownership in Mexico - particularly when dealing with a Fideicomiso? There are plenty of long-term rentals available in Todos Santos. I guess the downside is having to move periodically, so our efforts to downsize here in MA seem to be a very good idea, although I'm guessing that uprooting from time to time will get old as we do.
