But would AC be affordable on a $950 /mo budget? I'm assuming that electricity rates in Loreto are the same as in La Paz, and people with AC here complain about the high bills. (I don't have AC and don't know from experience.)

Hi, Kate,

You're right, I wouldn't be able to afford AC, but that's really not an issue for me. I don't like AC for the most part -- and I live in HOT country! It was 110-115 in the shade on my back porch for about a week this past summer. That's not normal here, but summers are typically hot and humid and with only a couple of hours of discomfort in the late afternoon/early evening, I get along just fine. Although I don't claim to always like it.

Re: A/C use in La Paz

We only notice a slight rise in hydro bill.
We don't run the split units allnight either. :)
Really don't see a need to run split unit that long, chill the room and shut it down.
We keep window coverings closed on the sunny side and limit the opening and closing of doors.

We had central air back where we originated from and I think the split units are way more efficient because of the ability to cool smaller areas.

I think that the people complaining about high bills run the A/C steady or close to it.

Kate,
I believe it's all a matter of priority. If you go out to dinner with your spouse, even to a considered reasonable establishment, it easily set you back 40 to 50 dollars, especially with a few drinks. This could readily pay for a weeks worth of air. Maybe two if you conserve. I rather have the comfort than pay the inflated price for a dinner out. Like I said, priorities.

Good point, Ed ... although some folks are hard pressed to afford either AC or pricey dinners. My personal priority was a swimming pool, which essentially performs the same function as AC while allowing me to keep my windows open and [cough] encouraging me to exercise. I've heard of folks with AC being surprised with bills as high as $1,000 US equivalent. Maybe it's just urban legend? Or maybe as Johnny says, they run it all the time and try to cool the whole house.
