Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
Nuts, the taste test will be the "killer" for the grow... but, it still will be very interesting what you can get from your location
The heat may be a real boost for some of them.. and if you can dry out a bit.. that too may help over all... Really enjoying your grow.. You never know what one can get unless you give it a try... Some did not think good pot could be grown in Humbolt County in California.. or in B.C. .. et al.. A completely different plant has evolved... who knows you may come up with something totally different.. Good luck.. and good to see the children coming along.. We can say we knew you when..

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
The weather is on the right track now. Warm days and the "rain every day" has gone away also. I just looked and most varieties are setting flowers. Some of the habaneros and fataliis have 20-30 flower buds coming on. I'll post some pics when they are more in bloom.
I'm now looking ahead to August when it will be 100F+ for 2-3 weeks straight. I may need to get a shade cloth set up so they don't stop growing. I'm having to invest a little $ this year, but next year, all I'll need are the seeds! The dollars haven't really been that bad, for a first year operation. germination trays, potting soil, peat moss, fertilizers $100 grow bags $50 2 yards topsoil/compost, delivered $120 (but I can re-use what's in the bags this year, plus the 1/2 pile that's still there) electricity for heat and lights while inside $100 and possibly a shade cloth set up- $150??? Next year, it'll be down to electricity. Not too bad, for a hobby~

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
Awesome! You ought to put an ad up here for online sales in the classifieds. I can attest to the quality product you put out. I am not big on hot sauce but the bottle you sent down with the guys last year was tried on some BBQ chicken and fish.
It was excellent!!!

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
Well, the little darlings are teenagers now. All but 1 variety have blossoms and pods, but I've only picked 3 ripe peppers.
The weather has been absolutely crazy! Bad thunderstorms a week ago and then 2 days later, even more! Since I'm on here, check out this video I took of the thunderstorm last weekend. This is taken with the video feature on the Kodak digital camera so it does not have the quality of a real video camera. The hum in the background is from the a/c unit we were standing right next to. Watch for the double lightening strike at 1:06, and then sheets of rain blowing sideways. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sLt5fdJuI4 Here's a couple screen shots of the still frame of the strikes- And here's the view over the garage the next morning, so you can see how close the hills are behind the garage. The lightening struck somewhere between our house and the hill. Also notice you can't even see the hill because of the rain. Even with the wild weather, the peppers weathered the storm fine, didn't loose any of them.

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
LOL, BG~ We try not to ATTRACT the lightening!
We should be getting some ripe pods in a week or so. We recently received some fresh pods from some pepper growers down south and have been tasting them on video. Here's one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wJRG_vU1vE And the next one- The set up for this one is...we had been to a bbq that evening, came home around 10:00 and started watching YouTube videos of people eating hot peppers. After a while, my brother-in-law gets all macho and says, "Alright, Lets eat this thing!" This is the results. Watch for the kid snorting peppers out his nose, hubby gets the hiccups, and brother-in-law...well...let's just say he speaks for himself! Caution! Graphic language! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiAinYE2t6E And a superhot Trinidad Douglah! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VwkJGookQM There are others on YouTube, just search for videos by Salsalady10. Hope you enjoy the pain from a distance~

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
well, the week or two for hoping for fresh pods is turning into a MONTH or 2!
We've been covering the pepper patchevery night with a piece of plastic for the last 2 weeks trying to protect them in the early morning hours. We had frost for the first time 3 days ago. So about a week ago, we moved some of the most promising plants into a small greenhouse. The first plants we saved were- Red Savina habanero Fatalii several unknowns Peter Pepper Douglah 2 prolific cayenne-esques that ate really yummy 2 Hungarian Carrots some bhut jolokia, trinidad scorpions and 7 pots for the ones that couldn't fit into the greenhouse, I moved them to a better spot in the field where they will get more sun. They will still get covered at nights. From L to R- trinidad scorpions Peruvian white habanero bhut jolokia 7 pod a few more of the pods- Mystery chiles- some green Red Savinas- a Peter Pepper- and the first few that were picked a couple days ago- cayennes, 2 fataliis. 1 (almost)Red Savina habanero, a green bhut jolokia and a green peter pepper that got knocked off the vine. edit to fix pictures-

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
and a few more-
greenhouse about 2 weeks ago, we had this unwelcome visitor buzzing the house, 3-4 times a day for 3 days straight... about the 3rd time on day 2, BajaNuts2 mooned them! Here's 'Nuts0.5 working on his first batch of hot sauce, a concoction made with peach habanero chiles and fresh peaches from our tree- 0.5 has been bugging me to start a worm bin for composting, so today, when removing the landscape fabric under the chiles, I saved these little beauties for him! AAaahhh, life in the country! Peppers, worms and cervesas! It's a good day!

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
Wow, frost already, and thats some healty soil you got going there..... worms appear to really like it
And the babies are looking really good... got some nice looking fruit... good show Can't wait for the taste testing with you guys.... Really something, your suspect for growing "something"... You should get to know the local Farm Advisor ...... bet they would love to see what you are doing... might be something that could help a lot of folks.... Ya know, growing something.... they used to call it "farming" a long time ago.... in a distance land.. people actually made a living doing it... how about that...

yea, we routinely see 3-4 LARGE busts a year for growing operations in remote areas around us. I was kinda sad I didn't have any shade cloth to put up after the first day to hide the plants. I don't need to get on any Watch List, but it still would have been interesting to mess with them. We had an incident a couple years ago, where the remote field got busted but the workers fled into the forest. A couple days later, 2 Mexican men showed up sitting alongside the road near town, didn't speak a word of English..... cops picked them up, then off to Border Patrol. We see Border Patrol vehicles around here all the time due to our vicinity to the Canadian border. It's not that difficult to get a Medical permit now-a-days in our state. I suppose it would be a good way to legally suppement the income.... ;)

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
Having lots of healthy, green, bushy plants in a well organized garden is something that will attract attention these days. Not too much too worry about until you see the guys repelling down form the choppers.

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
The season is wrapping up but still not over!
We've had the plants in the greenhouse for the last 6 weeks. At first it was turning on the electric heater at night and the sun would bake them during the day. For the last 10 days, the heater has been on 24/7. I hope our budget can handle the electric bill that's coming! I've been harvesting pods as soon as they have a little color on them and then put them in brown paper bags to ripen. Following are some pictures of some pickings, one of some fresh green Red Savina Habaneros, and some Red Savs that have been in a paper bag for a couple days. Some pods still on the vine and some sauces that I've been concocting out in the SalsaKitchen-

Re: Chile Pepper Grow Log 2010
Some of the things you see in the product pictures are-
2 kinds of pepper jelly lavender jelly 5 kinds of fresh pepper hot sauces BBQ sauces candied habaneros habanero simple syrup All these chiles have been getting ripe or in the case of the green ones, have had to be picked. I hate to see things wasted especially after fussing over them for this long! So I head out to the kitch and start playing around! Trouble is, I end up with all this stuff, and our family won't eat 10% of it all! I just don't know how to make a small batch of anything! Just too many years in food service, I guess....

They actually did that in New Mexico a few weeks ago, pretty much kicked down the doors of a private school with helicopters swirling around. They were growing tomatoes. |
