Heads up, We stayed overnight at El PABELON , we love that beach . We were forewarned to not stay there as there is a theft problem, while we were asleep in the camper someone broke in our pickup shell and took a travel bag full of tools. this happend last monday night.

We used to love staying there on our way North or South, but we've avoided it for many years now for that very reason. What a shame.

I have heard several similar reports of that area. Locals who used to car camp overnight there tell me that it has become a favorite spot for thieves. A real shame...

Default Camping in Ensenada Area

What are the possibilities for camping in the Ensenada area, especially near or on the beach? I do have dogs and kids and all would like to surf if possible - just small waves needed, nothing fancy. willing to rent small house and/or room if dogs and kids have enough space not to drive everyone nuts. looking at most likely July/August but possibly June/July.

Really flat there in the summer; waves come from the south at that time of year and the enormous Punta Banda to the south blocks it.

A bit south of Rosarito Beach is the call for then. K-38 and Turistas are suitable for beginner/intermediate; slow and gentle.

A few miles south of Calafia on the free road(south of Popotla/Rosarito) look for the Jesus statue east of the highway

Just past it, turn in here and find parking(pay lot near other folks for safety)

K-38 is to the left a short hike(a sloppy, forgiving right), and Turistas(likewise) is right out front to the right.

Thanks Marty! I thought I had actually surfed K38 but by the pics, I would say I missed it. That was back in the day where we always got pulled at the Border and had to pull everything apart so there are many reasons my memory could be foggy at best. The addition with pics and arrows is just superstar of you!

So, even if they don't let us camp there, we can at least find these. i imagine my kids will spend the first few times just trying to get comfy paddling, punching through, and riding on their stomachs. I am thinking we can make a few overnight trips up or down the coast for a nice small swell once they get those basics down. Best not to antagonize anyone on those first days for sure!

. . . but still need info on camping in Ensenada area. Where, how much (looking at getting a small 13' camper), will also have dogs . . ., do I need to make reservations ahead of time, is there somewhere I can just pull up to the beach and not worry about amenities and paying much?

thank you!

Excellent Marty and thank you! Do you have any idea about the cost? Is there fresh running water there that is ok for dishes, drinking, whatever? Should I be concerned about being turned away due to lack of space?

Here's some prices; sounds like no drinking water and not much non-potable. They do mention flush toilets and showers so there must be some.

Accommodations

"Motorhome Camping"

We do not have "hook-ups" therefore, Motorhomes will be "dry-camping". We do have water in case you run low..."

Here's some phone #s if you want to talk to them.

Default What am I looking at in camping costs? Anyone know BajaBill?

So now that I am considering coming down with a camper, what should I expect to spend in camping costs? I prefer cheap to free. I do not care for being in an RV park at all nor do I need amenities like water, electricity, etc. What I do need is room for my dogs and relative safety for my kids and 'junk'. I use to tent camp along the coast of Baja lots and we would get visits by the federalies but no other visitors and no problems. However, I usually had a handful of surfers with me and we all looked broke because we were so there wasn't much to want.

Also, I have been talking with BajaBill about working for him for the summer at his surf camp. Anyone know him? How far his place is from Ensenada? I think his place is South but I have never been there before.

Thx!

I looked at their website and couldn't find anything specific as to location. Is this one of Woody's big secrets???

Reading that description of his Northern Baja operation, it sounded like it was somewhere in the Mentawais/Indonesia.

Either that, or recapping the best day in 20 years at each spot.

Edit: I was looking for a pic of an average day at K-38

and found this advert
http://www.k38realestate.com/

I'd go for that with the kids.

Sorry - the "Woody" reference was an inside joke relating to a poster on another forum who jealously protects the location of his favorite Baja surf spot...

hey marty, thx again for excellent pics! the one you posted is just my speed, i am not a big wave surfer in any way at all and ride a longboard, however i do love a nice little smooth left. i see a little chop in the water and it has been some time since i have been down there but where i was tended to be really rough and choppy from the little i can remember. is it like so. cal where it tends to be a bit smoother in the early am and late day?

Not really.

That stretch faces south and is somewhat protected from afternoon breezes. Sometimes theres's even a little more light chop in the morning which is blowing offshore at the west-facing beaches.
