When in Mexico and a minor accident occurs, it is almost always best to work it out on the spot - especially as a tourist in a metropolitan area. If you are at fault, negotiate it down to an amount you can deal with. Even if it seems that they are asking too much, I suggest you pay it if you have the money. It will still be cheaper than the alternatives in most cases.

Here in San Quintin when a minor accident occurs with no injuries most drivers just get out, take a look at it, agree to see each other later to work it out and then continue on their way.
