Default Toyota recalls 3.8 million vehicles Potentially dangerous floor mats

Toyota recalls 3.8 million vehicles - Autos- msnbc.com

"...NHTSA said it had received reports of 102 incidents in which the accelerator may have become stuck on the Toyota vehicles involved. It was unclear how many led to crashes but the inquiry was prompted by a highspeed crash in August in California of a Lexus barreling out of control...

...In the August incident near San Diego, the fiery crash of a 2009 Lexus ES 350 killed California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor, 45, and three others on State Route 125 in Santee. The runaway car was traveling at more than 120 mph when it hit a sport utility vehicle, launched off an embankment, rolled several times and burst into flames..."

Family friend.

I experienced the mat-accelerator problem once and it was frightening. I was driving a friends pickup and I stepped on the gas to pass a slow bus south of Colonet. The accelerator stuck all the way to the floor, speeding us forward towards another slow bus with approaching trucks in the oncoming lanes, making passing again impossible. Luckily I kept enough wits about me to simply turn off the ignition and brake to a stop where I was able to figure out what happened. Cristina was in tears.

So very, very sorry to hear about your friend...

Turning off the ignition is the obvious response, and we naturally assume that when the time comes, that's what we'll do. The one time it happened to me (long ago, in a VW), I sat in horror, feeling the car gather speed on a busy bridge in Massachusetts, until I finally hooked my toe under the accelerator and managed to spring it up. Not once did it occur to me to turn off the ignition. I 'm very sorry about your friend. Lo siento.

Cried when I heard that.

Yes; I'm terribly credulous and naive. But to hear the founder's grandson read his apology and condolences to Mark Saylor's family into the Congressional Record still choked me up.

Damage control. Kinda like Tiger. There's a treasure trove of documents out there that will show these folks were making profit-oriented decisions for years. Now, is it much different, if at all, from other BS corporate cover ups? Perhaps not. What's done is done. If Toyota really wants to get this behind them, aside from not obstructing further investigation into their practices, it is to sharply discount the prices of their current models. Give them away for a few months. They have insurance for all the claims that will occur. So, don't be fooled by stories depicting huge payouts. My point is that rather than consider paying a fine to the government, they should basically sell their cars and trucks at a loss for a period of time. Face it. Even if sold at a loss, parts and and service will bring in revenue.

Default Something Shady Going On Here

"...most other automakers routinely allow much more open access to information from their event data recorders, commonly known as EDRs...the EDR system is...neither intended, nor reliable, for accident reconstruction...the Toyota statement said..."

That certainly BEGS the question: What is it for, then?
Quote:
When Toyota was asked by the AP to explain what exactly its recorders do collect, a company statement said Thursday that the devices record data from five seconds before until two seconds after an air bag is deployed in a crash.
So here we have a device, acknowledged to collect data around an airbag deployment, whose data is "unreliable."

True statement.. the data is in fact unreliable, to Toyota... as it consistency in reporting an accident is consistent, therefore one would NOT to rely on data which is consistent as it would not be inconsistent which would be reliable data to rely on........ see once you get the hang of spin 101 it's not to hard to follow...

See they are telling the truth...

Let's go buy a couple... just for the heck of it... the Pres said to "pull the trigger" go buy something, a new car, a house...
