The Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) reported that the military detained 11 supposed drug traffickers in the east of Mexico after a confrontation that involved shooting and resulted in the death of the one of the gunmen. The military had gone to investigate an anonymous call about the presence of armed men.

The drug traffickers were found to be part of a group of hitmen associated with the Gulf drug cartel. In their possession, the detainees had 17 large firearms, six small firearms, 25 fragmented grenades, five chemical grenades, and 11 vests with their logo. The military also found six vehicles, of which 4 were armored, uniforms with the cartel logo, and $206,200 pesos.

The National Defense confirmed that the arrests of the drug traffickers occurred on Tuesday in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. Nine of the detainees declared they would turn in a major boss of the Gulf Cartel who supervised the activities of the group in five states.

The other three stated that they were lieutenants responsible for the organization in Coatzacoalcos.
