We're already getting thunder, lightening, and a little rain in La Paz.

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
Strong winds, spectacular thunder & lightening & a little rain at the tail end. Power was out AGAIN for a couple hours....the only thing I envy you living in town....fewer outages & faster restoration of power!

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
Remember, the old adage "Be careful what you wish for...." is even more apropos during hurricane season! From the satellite images on "http://www.eebmike.com/" this morning, Olaf appears to have generated more rain, but whether it makes it as far North as you is still up to Mother Nature....and you know how fickle she can be!

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
I've got food & coke or juice, or iced tea, but I need ICE & a fan!! I've got that damn heat rash again this year & the instant the fan stops, I can FEEL the heat rash erupt to an even worser level than it already was!!
Grunon, I could sent you what I collected in containers under my famous waterfall skylite! That'd be enough to hold you over for a week or so! |

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
Looks like Olaf is going to be a BIG rain producer. I received an email yesterday that the rain was already falling in San Juanico. By the looks of that big white area, there are some heavy rains coming today.

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
If I understand this chart correctly, it shows the predictions for the amount of rainfall the clouds could produce. According to this, the center of the storm as it moves through the area has to potential for 45cm of rain, which is a bit less than 2 inches. Maybe it won't be that bad?
Problem is, this doesn't take into account the additional rainfall that lift from the mountains may cause. Today will tell... One of the worst storms we've experienced as far as rainfall amounts, was from a low like this one though. Last edited by BigWooo; 10-03-09 at 05:28 AM. |

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
45 cm is about 18 inches (~2.5 cm = 1 inch).
That could do a lot of damage in flood-prone areas. |

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
Wooo, following is a partial excerpt from the 5 AM update from the EEBMIKE site:
"OLAF WILL SHORTLY TURN NORTHEASTWARD...IF IT HAS NOT ALREADY...AND ACCELERATE AS IT MOVES INTO DEEP-LAYER SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW TAKING OLAF OR ITS REMNANTS ACROSS THE CENTRAL BAJA PENINSULA TONIGHT. THIS TRACK FORECAST IS A LITTLE SLOWER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE TO ACCOUNT FOR THE INITIAL MOTION. RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH OLAF WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD INTO CENTRAL PORTIONS OF THE BAJA PENINSULA AND NORTHWESTERN MEXICO TODAY AND TONIGHT." So it looks like rain is expected to continue for at least the next 12 hours. What's harder to predict is how much rainfall will occur in mountainous areas which will eventually make it's way down out of the mountains into lower lying areas. I know I was surprised yesterday when I saw how much water was still flowing across the hwy adjacent to the airport valley near Chametla, here in La Paz yesterday. So there is a very strong possibility of more damage caused by flooding as the accumulated water makes it way down from the mountains. I don't know your geographical specifics, but I do think that areas like Mulege are most likely in for more grief. |

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
8:30 AM.....Centenario is getting yet another light misty rain & more black clouds are moving in!
This is wreaking havoc on the finish plaster work being done on my Rabid Doberman enclosure! And it's not looking good for the roof leak repair that was scheduled for today! Half an hour ago, I woulda said no more rain for us this morning! I guess that qualifies me for a job with NOAA! |

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
That's okay, Wooo, you were up reading charts awfully early!
Looks like we in La Paz may see more of Olaf than we thought. They've moved the track prediction farther south this morning. So far just black clouds and a nice breeze, but I suspect there's more to come. |

Re: Tropical Storm Olaf
It has been raining here since 3 am, Heavy at times. Here in Nopolo, all the streets are flooded. Same as during a bad, windy storm. And it's far from over. Just hope that it moves. Right now it's only moving east at 3 mph, which means it will be over these parts for a while.

Yeah, I have fingers crossed for you two, remembering my own countdown and fears that something, SOMEHOW would go wrong. Tell those pesky 911 callers to lay off so you can worry in peace!!
Still windy in La Paz with dark clouds, but not a drop of rain yet. From the satellite images, it looks like we're on the bottom edge of it. |

Here's to just 10 more shifts....but who's counting? Then it'll all be good waves, gentle breezes & sunshine....NOT!
The skies just opened up again in Centenario.....it's pouring!!! |

Different storm related avtivities....
Some of the not-so-dumb-after-all amongst us seek high ground for a storm siesta! Didn't see Bing get up there....the only launch ramp is 6' below & laden with seashells encased in glass jars!
Those us us who opted for a siesta in lower areas awoke to regret it....one of my waterfall collection receptacles....the 1-gallon one....will be replaced with a 5-gallon bucket....muy rapido! Brings new meaning to the term "backsplash"! |
