![]() Driving Distances to Popular Spots in Baja The most popular destinations for tourists wanting to stay relatively close to the border are shown on the following table. INSURANCE Any driver must have Mexican auto insurance, this is strongly recommended, since U.S. auto insurance is not valid anywhere in Mexico. Inexpensive Mexican insurance can be purchased for a day, week or a month at numerous highly visible locations near the border on both sides; all you need is a copy of your current vehicle registration and a valid driver's license. Getting Mexican insurance is so quick and easy that many of these places have drive-through windows. American Automobile Association (AAA) members can buy this insurance in any of their Tourist Information Offices in Southern California or throuht the U.S.A. A number of San Diego rental car agencies also rent vehicles for Baja California and provide Mexican insurance.
