Seeing that list reminds me of a trip I took a long time ago.

A friend of mine and I took a three week trip around Mexico both on the mainland and Baja. By train, ship, rental car and bus. The first leg was a 26 hr train ride from Mexicali to Tepic ($25.00 one way fare). No first class accomodations for these two hardened travelers, we traveled with the locals on hard seats. Tepic is just south of Mazatlan and was nothing more than the end of the train ride for us.

But wait, there's more. We noticed that there were many beautiful Latinas in Tepic, many and they were young and friendly. We enjoyed our brief stay in Tepic and ventured on our way south to Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Ferry to Cabo San Lucas, and.... But that is another story.

By the way, there was a nursing school in Tepic, and I still would like to go back and visit.

wessongroup,

I don't remember what type of school it was, but the students left a lasting impression.

The rest of the story, maybe not relevant to this thread but is timely with the recent storms.

We arrived in Cabo on the ferry from Puerto Vallarta as I remember a 20 hour ride. This trip was on the cheap and so we camped on the beach listening to the huge waves pound the beach right below the Finisterra Hotel. I said to myself the next trip down I would stay at that beautiful property, 20 years later on a fishing trip I did that very thing!

We planned on taking our time working our way up Baja back to San Diego, but this was in Feb. and a huge storm had wiped out the original bridge south of El Rosario. What to do? We didn't want to just get back on the ferry back to PV so we took a bus up to Santa Rosalia and camped on the beach/rocks and waited until the ferry came in to take it back to the mainland. It was 2-3 days and it was a zoo with cars, trucks, etc. stacking up to get out of Baja, as the road north was shut off. We eventually got on the ferry and then took a bus, a long ride as I remember ($30+-), back to TJ.

This trip cemented my love of Mexico and Baja and it has been a big part of my life since, just like for many who hang out here.

Sorry if this became a highjack.

I had the opportunity and good fortune to take many trips in my earlier days like the one you describe Ken. Each one different and quite memorable. Funny how some of the best trips we take in life are those where we go economy.

And I must admit that I agree about your observation on the beautiful women of Tepic. Cristina was born in Nayarit, not far from the capital...

Not at all, the costs of train, ferry, beer, dates, presents.. fuel costs, etc.. I may not know them to the penny, but I can certainly use my imagination.. thanks for sharing.. threads can be narrow and threads can be wide.. just a matter how one wants to view it.. kind of like music.. very narrow and played with great structure and control or very wide and full of improvisations they are both good in my view.. mix them up and what to you have.. lots of music and here lots of thoughts and images for all.. again.. thanks for sharing.. wish you took some pictures..

And the cost of living for me in Mexico is 1/3 what it costs me up in the States...but, then my wife is deprived of a lot of shopping and lunches, visits to friends.. I am as she calls me "The Dirty Filthy Beast" (from the movie Father Goose, with Gary Grant, Leslie Caron, Trevor Howard and Jack Good)

Thumbs up Re: Cost of Living in Mexico

Interesting news.
Fortuitous, actually, as we plan on taking a very hard look at Chetumal.
What an excellent adventure this will be!
The numbers of naysayers is, almost, extraordinary. The xenophobic nature of our more and more limited educational system and society permeates so many minds.

I say keep your options option and don't be afraid to explore new ideas/places. You will know when you have found the right place...

I find it curious that while Chetumal is listed among the most affordable places, it is only 240 miles South of and in the same state as Cancun which is the third most expensive place listed. The climate is the same, prompting a similar amount of power usage in the hot weather. The only aspect that makes any sense to me is that the Belize side of the border is a tax and duty-free zone. there must be a whole bunch of cross-border shopping.

One should also consider that Chetumal is practically the farthest one can travel from the US and still be in Mexico.
