Can't say this is totally negative... some very important lessons are being learned, albeit at the "expense" of the environment, which directly impacts the economy of many, many folks

Hope they are successful ..... can't even begin to imagine how difficult this must be to correct (stop the release) and clean up the mess ...

Jeeeezo...If this doesn't show a need to free ourselves from oil dependency, nothing ever will. I don't know what's worse....killing every fish and bird east of Texas or being manipulated by the Arabs.
Both atrocities have to stop.

I couldn't agree more with you, Dennis. But, it would appear that US society fits the description of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. During my adult lifetime, I recall buying gas for 25 cents a gallon in the '60's. recall the Arab oil embargo? Odd and even days to buy gas? Difficult times resulted in many folks switching to more fuel efficient cars, but as prices eased, big, gas guzzling vehicles made a comeback. Remember the day in LA, when there was this fantastic system of mass transit (the red cars)? Screw that! Build freeways! We have a culture that seemingly cannot wean itself from individual transit and doing so in the most inefficient manner. Do not under-estimate the influence of those huge energy companies.

With everyone poised to dump on whatever the current administration does, just what if they created a combination New Deal/ Marshall Plan and funded a combination of intercity high speed rail and urban mass transit? Some might call it socialism. On the other hand, it just might provide the salvation of the American way of life.

I propose that as a symbolic gesture, Dennis ride a bicycle to his "nearby" Calimax. When that happens, it will be the clarion call for major reform for how we move about as a society.

Think that will ever happen?

There must be a confluence of government resolve and rejection of big money from big oil. Oh, and why did we really invade Iraq? Duh!

I would if it weren't tantamount to suicide. I don't want to end my life as a hood ornament.

Maybe this will serve as a wake-up call, time to go solar and hybrid, as for me part way there, solar elec. and solar hot water systems, highly recommend them, good for the environment and saves a ton of money in the long run. Down here going solar is very reasonable.....

You can't power aircraft with solar nor can you manufacture plastic with it.

I've read that our biggest challenge will be to develop a different source other than petroleum before there is too little of it to support the transition.

I'm thinking nuclear with hydrogen cogeneration on site. It has very high energy density(enough to power aircraft) and it makes water when it is burned.

There are some most difficult choices we can no longer avoid coming soon. I'd rather see us replace a large part of our coal-fired plants with nuclear, much as I am in favor of Iran developing nuclear power before the oil is gone.

We cannot afford to back ourselves into a corner on something this strategic, and I'm sure we haven't.

Those Cheney/White House Secret Energy Meetings sure as shit weren't casual social affairs. Most of this Homeland Military endeavor is implementation of access/control specified in those meetings.

Why is Iran so uncooperative?

I guess now would be a bad time to ponder how protecting British Petroleum shareholders' investments in Iran worked out for us.

Really does come down to this one substance.... that allows the world to "spin" as it currently does...

a shame we can't get our collective "arms" around the issue and/or issues .. in an objective fashion, devoid of: Race, Gender and Religion
