Default World Cup

Don't know how many of you are interested in the world's biggest sporting event, but just in case you are, here a rundown of the starting times of all the matches, the first of which features Mexico against South Africa, starting at 6.00 am Friday.
Don't forget that the times stated are GMT ( Greenwich Mean Time) and we have to deduct 8 hours from this to get to local time.

Interesting, Ed. Futbol (soccer) has never really caught on in the US. Obviously, it is greatly followed in communities that have immigrant populations, be they legal or otherwise. I have always thought that the failure of soccer in the US was because of the long games with little scoring. Perhaps, that's just why the NBA manages to draw such high ratings. What continues to confound me is that the so-called US national pastime, beisbol, is, if anything just as low scoring, and perhaps much more boring than is soccer. Go figure.

All that said, while I cannot fault the international Olympic folks, I have to believe that a site so remote as Capetown, given the distance and the time differences, is really not the best choice. Obviously, there is a socio-political statement to be made with the games in Capetown, logistics basically suck.

I agree. Never could quite figure why they gave the tournament to SA, but not for political reasons. Lots of crime and a security nightmare. And for us, a lot of games are in the middle of the night. Of course, Europe is mostly in the same time zone, or at least close.

Yeah, but I'm trying to forget how much luck, good and bad, is involved in sports. I hope the US doesn't have to play them again.

Where have you been ? On a bender??
