Default Mexico seeks more tourists - but is it safe to go?

...The beautifully crafted ads on cable TV and in mass-market magazines show no images of another facet of the nation: the bloody war between drug cartels...

It's stories like these that make us regret prohibiting trolls. Could you imagine the enormous bite on that headline alone?

It has become apparent that a major reason for some regions of Mexico being safe for tourists and citizens alike, is that those self same regions are where the drug king pins are quietly residing. They want to be as far away from the violence and scrutiny as possible. Hence, places such as Guadalajara, La Paz, and Cancun.

In the late 80s I made a decision to move to the Sierras from the valley because of the high crime rate. We lived up there about 2mos and one afternoon as i was watching the 5 oclock news I was watching a raid on a house about 1/2 mile down the hill from us on the news chanel It was the house where THE ING murders were comitted. So much for trying to isolate from crime.

Having lived in both Southern and Northern California, I learned that when referring to "the valley" it means a different place depending on where you are. San Fernando? San Joaquin? Sacramento? Just curious which one.

I don't think he could fit over 50 million there at most...

I lived up in the sierras about the 6500 foot level for a couple of years. Lots of crime, pot gardens and tweakers...

I lived up 88 and state 26 when I was there There was only one deputy sherrif assigned there .To say the least it was Wild and Wooley. The sad part of living there it was during the demise of the logging industry lots of people lost their livelyhood and had to diversify if you get my drift.

We had one deputy sheriff assigned to our area as well. He seemed more interested in catching and ticketing offroad bike riders who rode on portions of the pavement to reach other trails. Never made any impact in the real crime going on in our neck of the woods.

We didn't see him much after somebody took a shot at him, blowing out the lightbar on top of his truck...

Getting back to the topic.
It it quite apparent due to the post on this site as usual I dont have the same perception of danger that some have. That dosent mean I am not aware of the things that are happening. On a realistic scale there is less danger here than in just about any major city in the U.S. or for that matter the world. all I can do is continue to be aware and use my best judgment of any given situation.
When I first moved to Baja you would have thought i was a spokesperson for the chamber of commerce. when confronted with the Questions and fears expressed here . I still have the love of Mexico and especially Baja. But today I give any one the same advice COME SEE AND EXPERINCE FOR YOUR SELF. BAJA IS NOT FOR EVERY ONE . BUT IF YOU LOVE IT AS I DO YOU WILL NEVER LEAVE.

Anywhere but the mountains. Hill dwellers refer to valley people as flatlanders or flatliners

My wife was from Calaveres county. I am well aware of the attitude the locals take about people not from there. Kinda like Here no?

I relate to the relocation part. For me life has always been about the journey the destination has never really been that important
