Today I had the pleasure of making the drive up the road to San Pedro de Martir and spent some time with Mike (astrobaja) and Pamela at their ranch. What great folks and such a magnificent piece of property they get to call home. While there a thunderstorm came through and really lit up the place. The whole day was a great adventure and we look forward to going back and spending more time.
Thank you guys for the invite Baja Dark Skies Inn .

You can still see some of the damage that was done from the storms. It's a tough drive in but definitely worth the effort once you get there...

That is a nice spread. We really like the drive up to San Pedro Matir
Reminds me of the High Sierras. Our neighbor went up a few weeks ago and took some remarkable pictures of The CONDORS. |

The area reminds me a lot of Glennville up off 155, west of Porterville...

Wiley - you would have fun checking out your Bronco's 4WD on the 6km drive off the highway to Mike and Pamela's place. As they say on their website, it isn't for the faint of heart. I wouldn't try it in a low ground clearance vehicle for sure right now until Mike has the chance to work on the road some more. Once you are there you will be glad you made the effort as the place is truly one of a kind - 1200 acres!

Here are a couple - didn't get to take many as the storm came in so quick I was hardly able to get my camera out of the bag before the strong winds came up and the rain pouring down. You can see where they are building out a really nice patio with a BBQ area and adobe oven out in back of the house.
It really is coming together nice. They should feel very proud of what they have accomplished so far... .

They have a running stream year round on the property in addition to periodic summer storms. The clouds were pretty dramatic and changed quickly in size, color and form in just minutes.
The photos do not do justice to the storm we got to watch from the front row seats... .

Or the damage they had to endure last winter. I recall the posts Mike and Pamela made, documenting the damage. Gotta really love what you're doing to endure that. Never having been there, I gotta believe that it's the dark sky thing that drives a purist like Mike. Hope to have a chance to get there some day. Just don't own the type of vehicle that could get me in.

You could probably make it up with two wheel drive with a little patience if you have the ground clearance for a few spots that are tricky. I suspected that would be the issue which is why I left the all wheel drive ML350 at home and took the old Baja beater truck instead. It's an older F250 4x4, manual tranny with a factory lifted suspension and not much else.
Not particularly pretty but will go through almost anything, anywhere. It frequently gets called into service out here on the beach to pull other vehicles out of the sand; even some 4x4's, including a couple of Toyota's of late! (sorry DavidK) Mike will be working on the road so over time I am sure that will definitely improve the access... .

My Kia Rio?
![]() Just kidding. But, on a different note, I have to admit that I feel like there's a disconnect here. Good for the astronomer who wants to be in a perfect location. Really. But, a bed and breakfast? Obviously, you have had the pleasure of their hospitality. Just saying, however, as someone from afar, it strikes me just a tad strange to conjure a personality that would endure the remoteness of where they are, yet welcome visitors. Hope you understand what I'm saying. It's not the usual. But then, I may be growing feeble faster than Wiley. No offense, Wiley. |

I don't get the sense that they want to be completely isolated away from civilization, but the reality of astronomy requires a truly dark sky - something becoming extremely difficult to find on this planet anymore. Rancho Concepcion offers them exactly that and the setting is breathtaking.
Pamela has an extensive background in running an equestrian center and their love of horses is matched perfectly with the landscape of the 1200 acres they call home. I couldn't come up with a number of how many properties on this planet of this size would well match those two interests together today but I would guess very few and this is surely one of them. Obviously they are going to be more focused on a niche clientele but something tells me that they will be getting a lot of good referrals from those who make the trip up... .

![]() Can relate to the location myself, total privacy when wanted... put a fence up at the bottom of the road.. and meet those who will be staying... and bring them back to the place... And the BIG one for this location... WATER !!! you ain't got nothing, if you don't have water... what a find.. no worries... here... have fun kids.. Go outside and play... you know... go dig a hole, like my mom used to tell us kids... ![]()
