Default Mexicana Ceases Operations at Midnight Tonight

It has been no secret that Mexicana has been in financial trouble for some time. They filed a bankruptcy petition in US court earlier in the month. This has been the oldest continuously operating airline in North America. No mas. Charles Lindbergh once was a pilot for them. Rich history. Worldwide markets. Up until recently, both Mexicana ans Aeromexico were government controlled. They were both privatized. If my memory serves me correctly, Aeromexico was the first to go into bankruptcy, a few years back. From all that I read, this move is to force the workers to accept drastic pay cuts, be they baggage handlers or pilots. So much for capitalism. I did find it interesting that both of their affiliated "low cost" non-union subsidiaries are also shutting down tonight.

Just another thought on this-

I cannot help but feel that since they are shutting down their two low cost subsidiaries, even though, as I recall the bankruptcy filing did not include them, is evidence that they intend to squeeze more out of their non-union help as well. Link and Click were already designed to be competitive with the likes of Volaris. Ain't today's capitalism grand?

Not much better for pilot's for other carriers in the States...

"American Eagle $1,725 ~ Comair - $1,72 ~ Chautauqua - $1,650 ~ Mesa - $1,596 ~ Mesaba - $1,800 ~ Pinnacle $1,575 ~ Skywest $1,425 ~ Trans States $1,628
(*all without per diem, based on minimum monthly guarantee, 12 pay in largest fleet type)"

In Roger Moore's movie "Capitalism a love affair".. pilots were saying they made less than 12,000 per year... with no benefits ...

Just googled to get the above... a comment from a husband and wife, both pilots.. they made combined $33,000 last year...

All said the Companies count on the folks "love of flying" ......... and it works..

By and large, the carriers you cited are regional, short hop airlines. Mexicana certainly did not fall into that category, what with flights to many South American and European destinations; not to mention several US venues. Given that, one should compare to US legacy carriers such as United, Continental, Delta, or American. Or to such carriers as Lufthansa or British or Air France. I have to believe that given the standard of living and the cost of living in Mexico, Mexicana's pilots weren't making anywhere near what the other big guys were paying.

I did just read another article that shed a bit more light. Mexicana was recently sold. Prior owner, Grupo Posadas, Mexico's largest hotel operator (Fiesta Americana, Fiesta Inn, Caesar Park). Seemed like a good match. New owners consist of venture capitalists. Appears they are trying to squeeze more profit after reorganizing by drastically lowering cost structure. I'm guessing Grupo Posadas made out OK in this. Now it will be the employees turn to fund that profit for the new owners.!
