Only know what I've heard....they're rubber. Two years back, they bought 500 of them from China and they use them over and over. Chewy little bugs.

Nope, see them (fishermen) out every morning at their traps... there is a rock shelf here at El Pescador which extends out about 200 yards.. then drops off into the large portion of Descanso Bay.. there is a kelp bed which shelters the lobster beds from significant tidal influences and afford the lobster a good breeding ground..

Can see them using my webcam.. (just checked and it is down right now).. they go out every morning at 6 a.m. to check their traps... we had a spotting scope and could watch them pull up the traps, while unwinding all the kelp from the anchor ropes for their lobster traps.

The first house we rented had a lobster trap you could toss out and low tide..

At low tide one can walk almost to the edge of the rock shelf which again is almost 200 yard from the beach...

Will check on the camera... and if you want.. you can see them harvesting their catch "live"

the camera is on my website and it's url is up... around here some place...

Myself, have been down a year.. and have not eaten one... the wife has eaten two, and they were "ok" ... said the best she has had in many years was up in Dana Point at the Wind and Sea Restaurant.. must agree, I had a steak.. it too was excellent... as was something we both became addicted to... Artichoke, split in half, then baked, with all kinds of garlic, butter and parmesan cheese ... we have included this into our eating menu at home.. easy to make and just delicious, if you go in for "garlic","butter" and "parmesan cheese" on a freshly baked artichoke... enjoy.. getting hungry right now.. and I smell chorizo being prepared as I type.. oh my..

We have heard that Casa de Pescador has the best ..... but, things always change...

Think a lot has to due with the "pressure" placed on the population of lobsters used to service the restaurant industry... the lobsters are not allowed to get to large size.. which gives a more solid muscle in the tail section and overall to the entire animal..

Sort of like a good trout.. one which is not a plant... ya, know the difference between a "native" and a plant.. and one that has been out for 3-5 years.. just gets a better taste and the meat is much firmer...

It all helps... enjoy ..... I usually ask for "chili verde" and seems to be a good choice.. as I get a load.. think the cooks.. like the change of pace ... maybe should ask for liver, onions and bacon... no telling what they would come back with

I have heard that they use local lobster at certain times of the year and at others they are imported. The locals here all keep a trap out year round and CONAPESCA doesn't seem to bother them as long as they aren't selling them. Lobster is a regular part of the diet around here...

Like a lot of places down here the political and economic climate has not been too kind to places like Puerto Nuevo.I can rember when the parking lot there was full of tour buses and cars almost daily.

Yeah....they take all they can get, big and mostly small. It takes seven to eight years for a lobster to grow to one pound.....that's the beginning of legal size.
I know this....used to do it for a living out of the same Dana Point Wiley mentioned.

Well, I was thinking of going, and I thought the "ad" would stimulate some conversation about it. So far, I have not heard from one person who has ever been to the annual lobster festival. Maybe it is not such a big deal?

Probably not a big deal for a reason. For a lot of years, that's all PN was known for...Lobster. It would be like McDonalds having a Big-Mac festival.
I was first in PN for lobster dinners forty years ago when restaurants were actually peoples houses. It had a great reputation even then and the ambience was wonderful.
All gone. Ortega's ate it up.

Local lobster are now in season so that's what you will be served until local lobster season ends- then you will get the frozen stuff. Most tourists come to PN in summer- and get the frozen stuff. Once you deep fry it and dip it in butter- it isn't all that special. The lobster platter with three drinks for $20 is a good deal - depending on the size lobster tails. Senorita Mysterious should know these local lobster are not related to the Maine lobster, aren't as sweet and have no claws. You can still get Maine Lobster delivered live (US address) for less though... a dozen delivered for $153

Hmmm, I knew they were not the same as Maine lobsters, but I did NOT know that they had no claws! Poor babies -- how do they protect themselves?

The $20 platter includes only HALF a lobster, and I don't know it's size ...

Nice to know about the Maine lobster, although I can't imagine ordering a dozen at once, and it would be very difficult for me to drop a live one into boiling water (or otherwise kill it). Nope -- I don't fish. I'll eat the fish, but I won't hook 'em or kill 'em.

Their tail is lined on each side with exoskeleton that resembles large teeth and it opens and closes like a bear trap. You have to be careful in the way you pick them up.

Festival? Although I had not planned to go there, the start of our recent trip got delayed by 7 hours. Crossed the border at 730 and was headed to Ensenada for the night. Worried that we´d get there (Ensenada) too late for dinner, I pulled into Puerto Nuevo at about 8:15 Friday night. As I drove around, I passed one empty restaurant after another. No people on the street. We settled on the three story place where we´d been before. Can´t recall the name. We were the only customers. Much of the help was just sitting around downstairs. We left at 10. Everything else appeared to be closed.

Believes that describes adequately what these poor folks are trying to get through...

Their entire lives were built on ONE thing.. tourism and ain't here anymore, nor are they most likely going to see it the way it was for a very long time ..

Don't know how they are making it... but, then I sure there are a few NOB that are just about as bad... nowadays...

Saw some numbers on Vegas... just plain shocking... not sure what is going to happen.. as they too were dependent on the same thing...

Was joking in another thread about looking in Vegas for a rental... just might to that... there is more empty space there, than North Dakota around 1850....

Might find a nice place for the winter... always liked the buffets plus one can get a pretty good steak there too .... extrodoary selection of food... Can't imagine what it's like, it been a very long time since I have been in Vega, and again, I hear they just plain empty..... just have to stay away from those tables...

Thanks.. it all helps.. .
