Default NFL Playoffs!! Who?

Ok... here we go into the NFL playoffs. There are 7 games left. What is your pick?

Today: I take Baltimore +3 over Pittsburgh and Atlanta -2.5 against Green Bay

Tomorrow: I take Seattle +10 over Chicago (but I think Chicago will win it)
and NY Jets +8.5 over New England (hate both of those teams)

Go Chargers in 2011 !!

You referring to the Los Angeles Chargers? Lotta talk around about the Chargers being able to opt out after next season. Combine that with a recent proposal to build a privately funded football stadium next to Staples Center, and who knows?

Funny thing is that by and large, LA residents are ambivalent about bringing the NFL back. Anyway, there has been a proposal gathering dust for several years to build a stadium in the City of Industry. However, just recently, the folks that developed Staples Center and LA Live! floated a proposal to build a privately funded stadium downtown. I'm talking Denver based billionare Phillip Auschultz and his AEG Entertainment group. The even have several designs already submitted.

But, the turd in this punchbowl is that privately funded actually means using money borrowed from the taxpayers.

Los Angeles Football Stadium

By the way, how many Charger games were blacked out in San Diego this year because it wasn't a sellout?

Well, based on very limited exposure over Christmas and New Years:

Pittsburgh over Baltimore
Green Bay over Atlanta
Seattle over Chicago
New England over New York (but only because I lived in Boston)

They're talking about municipal bonds. And get this- AEG says they guarantee the money will be paid back. Just what does that mean?

I believe you. Just that one of the reasons touted for the departure of the Chargers is that they don't get enough revenue.

Fact is they profit $30 million a year in San Diego... but in LA they could most likely double that.

Bob...Looks like you're going to be down 0 -2 as of Sat night! I too wanted the Ravens to win, but alas they just couldn't keep up with the Steelers!

The Packers look like they'll beat the Falcons, big time tonight...

I'm with you about the Seahawks, but I don't think they'll be able to get by the Bears, even as weak as the Bears see to have been recently...

I think the Pats will pound the Jets as well...

So the band plays on...still some great football to enjoy before we have to endure the long NBA season...Thanks goodness it's not too long before the 'pill' gets to be thrown around the diamond again this spring!

What's scary is that I'm 2 for 2 and have watched each team maybe once! I'll no doubt do worse today, because I don't think I've seen New York or Chicago play at all.

Kate, your 2 for 2 is an accomplished fact, but your Seahawks are taking a profound beating, as expected, going into the playoffs with a loosing record.
Not much hope, unless they make an even bigger comeback than the Steelers.
New England should be a shoe in this afternoon though.

BTW, I'm toggling between La Ligua (Spain) soccer games and football.
Soccer really a more exciting game with far more required skills.
And now for the feedback....

"Soccer really a more exciting game with far more required skills"

Kinda puts you in the minority NOB. Americans crave alot of scoring. Think that much of the support for professional soccer (futbol) in the US is fueled by Latino and European immigrants. Just check out the demographics at a game at the Home Depot Center.

That said, I do agree with the skills part.

Hey Ed, nobody's perfect. They won the 4th quarter.
Howodd, if Americans crave high scoring, how do you explain baseball? That's one sport I really don't miss watching.

A favorite uncle of mine has lived in the Chicago area his entire life and that includes countless seasons spent watching a losing team from his cold Soldier Stadium seat where he has held a pair of season tickets all the way back since the George Halas days.

The experience has left him with a story he loves to share about his beloved "Da Bears":

Sunday was a home game near the end of another losing season for the Bears. The December forecast was snow with ice-cold wind coming off the lake and as much as I love my Bears, my heart was just simply not into this one.

So I started asking my family if anybody wanted my tickets for the game. Friends and neighbors were called as well and by Friday evening I was starting to get concerned when not even any co-workers wanted the tickets.

So Saturday morning I headed to the market with our shopping list, the tickets and a plan.

I parked near the market front door in a good spot and purposely left the drivers side window open. I placed the two tickets conspicuously on the dash above the wheel, in plain site and figured that the temptation would simply be too great for someone and I would be relieved of the tickets and another cold day of suffering.

Once inside the market I took my time, even heading down aisles that were not on my list, just to make sure that I gave someone enough time and opportunity. I chose the register with the slowest checker/longest line and even perused the board on the way out where contractors, baby sitters and real estate agents all advertised their services.

Feeling good about the fact that I would now have a "free" Sunday I even found myself enjoying the idea that maybe it would be fun to take the family out to a movie.

So I pushed my loaded cart out to the parking lot and made my way to the old station wagon, excited to think that the tickets would finally be gone and my Sunday free from the weight of the responsibility those two tickets had placed on my shoulders.

I was almost afraid to look, thinking that I might somehow jinx the chance that they would be gone and I went around to the back of the wagon to load the groceries before finally making my way up and open the drivers door, gasping at the sight.

There were now four tickets on my dash...
