![]() Commerce, industry and tourism groups in conjunction with environmental and labor organizations in Los Cabos and La Paz, called for the state and federal authorities to permanently cancel open pit mining projects of Canadian companies Vista Gold and Pediment. David Sosa, spokesman for Californianos del Sur Organized for Sustainability (SOS), said that both companies are planning huge mining developments in the Los Cabos region, considered a "tourist jewel of Mexico." "Their intention is to mine gold and silver for 10 years, in the vicinity of two ecosystems that are part of the conservation programs of the United Nations and the Mexican government. "The Gulf of California, considered 'the world's aquarium' for its marine biodiversity, and the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve, the only source of fresh water to major cities in the state, La Paz and Los Cabos," said Sosa. Both projects, he said, have been assessed by environmental experts who have warned of the risk of cyanide and arsenic contaminating the Sierra de La Laguna aquifers. Beginning at 7:00 AM, thousands of vehicles arrived at the beach El Tule, with people dressed in green. More arrived with signs and banners to participate in the the protest that has been ongoing for the last couple of months; managing to unite all sectors and social classes. Armando Sanchez, vice president of Canacintra Los Cabos, noted that the event exceeded expectations and encourages the group to continue the fight to stop open pit mining. "It is a call to the international society; the first in a series of protests focused on protecting our environment." "This is only just the beginning," he proclaimed. source... |

That location is probably the last stretch of undeveloped beach anywhere near that size along the corridor. Main reason is that it's sitting where a major wash runs into the Sea of Cortez. Fairly safe to say it will remain mostly undeveloped. Can't count the number of times the Higway One bridge got knocked out crossing that wash.

Well done, gang...and all this time I thought 'SOS' stood for that delicious military meal of chipped beef and gravy on bread - affectionately called by all in uniform, "$### On a Shingle'
