Default Diesel Tanks over the border

I have a friend who intends to bring an ATV Trailer with two quads on it and a 100 gallon diesel tank to use for his pickup. I seem to remember that there is some issue with bringing fuel across the border? His intent is to cross at San Ysidro. His wife thinks there might be a problem also. he is indicating that he has it handled, but has had only one trip to Baja. Would hate to see their trip spoiled and her go to jail for murder!!!!

Any advice?

I haven´t heard of anybody having problems bringing fuel down, only when they try to cross back with it in what would appear to be a large amount for sale. When the price of gas spiked high in California awhile back there were folks trying to cross diesel into San Diego and selling it at a good profit margin. You know who got upset?

The excise tax division at the IRS...

I've had a different experience. I carry extra five gallon cans of diesel when traveling to the U.S. from Mexico. I make sure I use them up when in the U.S. because just about every time I cross the border back into Mexico, I'm asked if they are empty or full. I've been told directly from Mexican customs officials you cannot bring full gas cans into Mexico.

Now a tank that's part of a trailer, they may not even give it a second look. They seem to focus more on portable fuel containers.

Why would he want to bring diesel into Mexico? It's much less expensive here. There's no problem using Mexican Diesel in newer trucks. I have a '08 Chevy Duramax with 15,000 using only BCS diesel. It's not an issue.

I don´think the US has a problem with you bringing a couple of 5 gallon containers. 100 gallons maybe a different issue. You are right Wooo about the price difference so I am not sure what the issue is...

Really? A good friend recently retired from the excise tax group of the IRS and told me that was one area they were focusing on recently.

Well Thank You all for your comments! Will see in two weeks what happens! There will either blood in the scuppers when she kills him or the big, I told you there was no problem, you never listen to me.

Should be interesting.
