You can get something like this at Costco in Baja.. we used one for a year... on a 20# propane tank... think they were around $4-$5 dollars to fill a 20# tank.. had a few at the house up north along with a heating element I used to use when working out in the garage... but, it worked just fine.. for us.. the house was around 1700 sq/ft.. and it did a very good job..
And it's a lot cheaper than wood.. less bugs, trash, ash ya know all that stuff ya get to do with a fireplace... heated a home with wood for 10 years... another "task" which will wear ya out so to speak..

![]() ![]() ![]() No 10 hour drive...Just had to brave the wind and blowing dust during the journey to my garage. 30 mph NE winds came up this afternoon, some of that SOC wind is spilling over to our side this evening. |

It was just something we found when down... last year... that worked for us... and I had it in my garage up NOB... doing nothing... luckily we were only 1 hour and 40 minutes back to our place NOB.. plus Costco in Rosarito was only 10 miles, along with the distributor of the propane.. refills became fun, got to know all the guys.. they would help me and my wife take the tanks out... and we would give them a $5 dollar tip for all their trouble... all wanted my dog "Scout"... Had a fireplace... could get a pickup load of Oak, for $50 .... anyone that has burned wood to keep warm in a "true" fireplace knows how that works.. the heat goes up the chimney... The first place we leased had a really nice fire place.. you could sit by it... and enjoy a roaring fire... a picture of my "Scout" and a fire in the early morning .. we were just "chillin" early one morning, I could not sleep.. so we had a fire.. till sunup... Mom was north, and we were "batching" it... Woo from your description ... of the weather conditions outside .. hope you have some good ski goggles... ouch !!! on the blowing sand and rocks.. worked erecting transmission towers in my youth, found working in the desert one of the more difficult environments to work in.. steel would put blisters on your shoulders when "punking" steel up and down ... all your tools would hot as heck, you had better not loses your gloves.. and the blowing sand and rocks.. were just icing on top of a tough job.... which made working out side in 115º plus ... a little like torture ... oh, we got paid for it... but, was not something I wished to make a career out of... which I did not...

Wood burning stoves are your best bet and very efficient at keeping the heat inside the house...

![]() ![]() Here in Nopolo, it's 61 degrees inside this morning, the coldest I've ever seen. Have some electric space heaters, but with 12 foot ceilings, they're pretty much useless. Warm up suits work well though. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Electric blankets are a nice luxury that we can't use with solar power ![]() Guess I'll have to shop for a nice warm up suit! I was hoping this cold snap would break soon, still no end in sight, although it did stay above 40 last night. Guess that's some improvement. Opened the door because it looked warm outside....not. Still only 56 at 9:30 a.m. |

Cold is walking in 20 degrees against a 20 kt wind hunched over trying to cover your face and see where you are going at the same time. Cold is sitting on a stalled chair lift for half an hour in a 30 kt wind and a wind chill of -50. Cold is white....everywhere. This isn't it.

"These heaters are advertised as "exterior" on every site I visited."
Crack a widow.... and you'll be fine.. had monitors also... just to clam the wife... Been ice fishing... only thing I passed out from was the "scotch" we were drinking... Would think the warning is a bit like child "proof" caps .... to protect those that don't...

I, for one, cannot imagine not having a fire place. I'd look in to installing a wood burning stove. They can be installed just about anywhere in a home and ducted through the roof. They provide a lot of heat and doesn't burn a whole lot of wood. You can even cook tortillias on top of them,
![]() Good price on this one as some of them can be very expensive... Logwood 900 sq. ft. Wood Stove - 1261 at The Home Depot Last edited by Bob H; 02-06-11 at 01:50 AM. |

Electric blankets really use very little electricity - I think they are a perfect solution for any off-grid home. There are some really nice wood stoves that can be picked up for a song right now in California...

While I suspect that the watts, volts and amps of electric blankets are fascinating to some readers, all of you have on a variety of occasions demonstrated all sorts of creativty.
On those few chilly winter nights we experience in Baja can you not th ink of other ways to stay warm and "cuddly"? E.g. a hot buttered rum, soft music, low lighting and............. |

Oh yes. Firewood. Seems to me that there are vast stretches of Baja where it would be in short supply. No?
