I'm guessing that Westphal got at least a slap on the wrist from the White House. His original statement was foolish on its face. Send US troops "to the border" to fight the insurgency? What are they going to do? Stand at the border and stare across? Westphal obviously had more in mind. Like crossing the border. Had he said that, he'd be working at Walmart by now.

That said, all reliable statistics show that major US cities within proximity of the border have actually seen lower crime rates the last few years. The Arizona governor's ludicrous claim that decapitated bodies were strewn along the border notwithstanding.

Obviously it is not a classic insurgency but it is a threat to the stability of Mexico. I think that if the military had not stepped in a few years back the scenario today would probably be much different...
