Our water temperature here varies but hangs around 60-62 °F.

Re: A perfect sunset ending to a perfect day...
I have a very close connection to the island as we were recently successful in obtaining the federal concession for the island so we can begin our abalone reseeding project. We have spent the last several months cleaning up around the east side of the island where decades of old fish camps have left lots of trash, decaying constructions and rusting traps. After hundreds of trips pulling pangas full of trash and other cleanup it really is looking a lot better. We have begun construction on our new base camp out there with housing for staff, bathrooms/showers, mess hall, warehouse and other support facilities. Here are some more photos from the island including one taken inside of one of the old fish huts, some of the local inhabitants, an underwater view from the island's south side and some views from the island back to the coast where we now live...

That's a great idea! Is the red abalone native to that area? I still remember diving for the biggest one I've ever caught in the Mendocino area.

Wild, I would love to see more pictures of the island, any of the island's vegetation. I like coastal shrubs, sage, grass, cactus, etc, mainland too...
Thanks for the water temperature, I'm a fair weather swimmer and 61 62 is a little too cold for that... |

Fantastic I really miss the sunsets over the water ,my house is situated in a cove of sorts and the curvature of the bluff blocks the sunset. We do have great sunrises but i never get up in time. Those pic. of the water are beautiful.

Re: A perfect sunset ending to a perfect day...
Great pics BG! I like the underwater pic, too...but the seal face is full of character! You've been pretty quiet on the abalone project for quite a while. Can we assume things are moving forward? Are there any abalone seedlings clinging to the rocks yet or are you concentrating on living facilities for the staff & a security presence before you start populating the nursery?

Re: A perfect sunset ending to a perfect day...
The abalone project is moving forward.
Reseeding abalone is a complicated process with some very key steps that must be set up correctly if we expect for a high percentage of the seedlings to survive. We are completing the support facilities onshore that include incubation tanks with 24/7 flow where the seedlings will spend their first few weeks to acclimate to the local waters and environment, a warehouse, repair shop, storage and other support facilities for the local workers including some onsite housing and security. We already have security that is stationed full time on the island and we are looking forward to the actual seeding process once the building phase is completed and the biologist gives us the thumbs up...

Re: A perfect sunset ending to a perfect day...
I Googled....there's a lot of sites out there on abalone culture from seedlings! "acclimate to the local waters and environment"....does that mean you're not going to be starting with "local" critters?
Uh oh!!! There's much less info for Mexico abalone seeding.....& I hate to tell you this, but the top one that came up is for selling abalone seed jewelry!! You'd better plan in doubling the security staff! Maybe move the killer dogs out there!! |
