It looks to me at first glance to be a positive thing...

That looks like an informative website too- "Yucalandia". Thanks for the link.

Can't tell if the new FM laws are a step forward or back for our situation. Luckily we have a few more months til renewal time for the dust to settle.

From the face of it I think it is a good thing.Maybe they will have some of the kinks worked out by the time I have to renew since I just renewed in May.

There has been EXTENSIVE discussion of this on MexConnect (put your hip-waders on):

I believe general consensus is that while the law has been passed, but it'll be several months before the specific regulations will be written, so trying to figure out what this could mean to each of us is pretty much a moot point until they get around to hammering out the individual regulation details.

I'm sticking to "wait & see mode"!

Wow, lots of interesting reading. My fm3 expires this Aug, so it may get interesting. I am really curious about this part of the new law:
Permanent residency can also be granted to concubines after 2 years of Mexican bliss (as a part of the 2 years of Temporary Residency).
Article 55, Item III

My mind conjurs up all kinds of images but somehow I doubt I qualify. I have way more than 2 years of bliss down here.

My concubine days are, regrettably, in decline and probably could not qualify. Would be nice if our combo of 7 FM's (3's and 2's) qualifies for "permanency". We love this place and if push came to shove I could go back to being a waitress or cook without a lot of paperwork.

You got to admit, the term "concubine" does throw a little bit of spice into the mix. Something you just got to love about Mexico...

True. They could have used "consort". But they prefer jalapeno to jello.

I just renewed mine and was hopeing for the same thing. It would be really nice not to have to mess around with the renewal thing every year,

Which of the current immigration statuses allows you to get rid of your fideicomiso? I haven't seen any reference to that issue in the discussions about the upcoming changes. Has anyone else?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the changes propelled you faster towards that goal. No more annual fees, no more pay outs to the banks to receive their blessing for permits etc, no more IRS 3520 and 3520A filings.

To be able to hold title in an escritura you will need an FM1 - "naturalizado". Definitely the way to go IMHO if you are planning on staying down here...
