Default My non-owl

For the past few weeks I've heard the distinctive WHO WHO of an owl. I first noticed it one night after dark....too dark to try to spot it!

Then once I got used to listening for the WHO WHO, I began to hear it during the day as well, but for the life of me I couldn't spot the owl by tracking the direction of the sound.

Then, one day I found it!!! Only to have Carlos tell me I wasn't hearing WHO WHO....but COO COO & my owl turned out to be a dove!! So I said "NO!" & walked him around to the bay side of the house & pointed to my owl still perched atop a cardon....he burst out laughing & told me a sparrow just perched on my owl's head! It seems that my owl is a dead segment at the top of a cardon! Aging eyes really SUCK!

I suppose I'm the ONLY one who can see an owl in this pic?

I'm sticking to sunrise & sunset pics! They're a lot harder to mistake!!

Upon closer inspection, I think it really is an owl.....

Not so fast, kimosabe! Last week there was a big owl over here perched on top of the cardon right outside our wall. About 7 in the evening, We watched it for quite awhile as did Willie, our cat, who was on the top of the rock wall not more than 20 feet (as the owl slies) from it. It was big! I finally decided not to count on the Owl going after the myriad of rodents that hide in and around the wall and plucked Willie off, with the owl watching me the whole time, and Willie watching the owl.

Ollie stayed about half an hour and flew in your direction.

We get a lot of owls out here at night. A couple have scared the crap out of me as they came swooping by in the dark without even the slightest warning.

I guess they mistook me for a big rat...

I'm no ornithologist, but as I understand it, they are effective hunters because of their eyesight and the configuration and type of feathers allows them "silent running". If Pelicans are 747's, owls must be stealth bombers.

Doubt he thought you were a rat, but possibly that the hair was a nest?

Well, zeeeeesh! You mean you actually gave Ollie a real-time demo on how bigger predators can effectively snatch up their prey in the wild!?! So did you recognize Ollie from the zoom BigWhooo provided to better show off my owl? He comes back over there with a white pelt in his talons....I don't wanna know!

Well, on the upside BG....less hair = less to grasp in talons & easier to clean off if you get used for "target practice"!

We were coming home from Ensenada late one night and when we rounded this curve in the road This giant WHITE OWL flew across the road so low and close, to this day I dont know how we kept from hitting it.
I have never seen another like it before or since.

Ollie visited us before you started the thread, legz. He's BIG and could have put a major hurt to Willie who is only slightly larger than Bing.
