AP - CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Hundreds of people cowered for about two hours inside a shopping mall in this resort town Saturday while security forces traded sporadic gunfire with armed men in the parking lot and then searched stores for suspects.

No one was injured in the gunbattle, but some cars and entrance doors to the shopping center were damaged, authorities said.

Police said they arrested two men who were also suspected of being involved in an overnight attack near the mall that killed a Mexican marine.

Authorities said the shooting at the Plaza Sendero shopping center erupted when marines and police found armed men in the parking lot about 1 p.m. Police ordered shoppers and employees to stay inside during the battle and the later search of the mall.

The military said army troops arrived to help secure the area and caught one suspect, who was turned over to city officials. The soldiers also provided security for the shoppers and employees inside the mall, who were allowed to leave around 3 p.m.

We were in Cabo on Saturday had a great day. As we sat in Squid Row from 2:45 til 4:00pm and watch the Marines heading east I wondered where the three trucks of Marines were going in full battle gear. Now we know.

Yikes - I really hate to hear about this kind of violence spreading south...

While we were back in Minnesota for two months there were 11 murders in just our state. That's not counting all of the gun issues that law enforcement had to deal with. BUT it might be a remote incident down here I wish it didn't happen at all.

It would be nice to know WHY these guys had gun and what there intentions were.

I have this feeling that the Media / Government / Officials will be putting a lid on this.

They do not want the BAD publicity!!!

Baja Sur is advertised as Mexico's safe spot.

Maybe but news like this gets out anyway. You can control the press but you can't stifle blogs, forums, email...

The golden beaches of Los Cabos in Mexico’s Baja California were thought to be a million miles away from the drug war hitting border cities such as Ciudad Juarez.

But even this Pacific paradise is not totally immune from the relentless conflict plaguing Mexico.

A series of gun battles shook the town of Cabo San Lucas on the night of Friday Oct. 28 and afternoon of Saturday Oct. 29.

No tourists or Americans were harmed in the fighting — which killed a Mexican marine and an alleged cartel gunmen.

But the news was a slap in the face for tourist officials who have correctly said the resort has been safer than most American cities — and has homes of Hollywood stars and athletes.

During one of the battles on Saturday afternoon, shoppers had to wait for two hours in a mall, while security forces outside shot at criminals.

In an earlier shoot out on Friday night, some Americans filmed this video.

Over the sound of gunfire, you can hear a man commenting on the situation and assuring others he is taking cover.

“They are going now. I’m ducking. It is about 100 yards away,” he says. “That is AK47s. ---ing something is going on. I’m coming, I’m ducking. Dude, grenades? Holy ---. Good old fashioned gun battle. I’ve got to go inside.” Watch below and see for yourself.
