So, what do you think that might mean? I followed your trip in June, but haven't found a follow up on what your plans are. Will you put some more years in where you are (East County, right?) or cut the string and move south?

I read your post in another thread about the joys and struggles of spending unbroken time together as a family after years of shift work. I get that, it takes me about 3 weeks to get used to being at home and not on the boat when I get back home in the fall. My wife has a much faster rate of adaptation than I do, and that is a source of stress between us. I need to remember how to sleep, and need space around me after being on a boat where I'm accessable to everyone 24/7. My wife on the other hand, is ready for long walks and deep conversation.

Anyway, what do your winter plans look like?

Well, right now we are recovering from probably the most stressful 4 months of our lives.
We have lost a lot of our possessions to black mold, a hostile landlord, a few attorneys and, yet, managed to stay married.... it was a serious test of us and who we are and what we are made of.
We are kind of day to day right now after, finally, moving into a house after being in temporary housing for the last 3 months.
So, bottom line is we know what tomorrow will bring, barring anything intervening like what happened to the now dead people from multiple accidents in our district today, and we are content with that.
In a month or two we will start planning more for the future.
Mexico is not completely off the table nor is North Carolina or even staying here longer.
So hard to say at this point.
My wife did say that if we do end up in Mex that she would like our kids to attend private school. She is smarter than me so I won't argue that point.

I may have an opportunity to apprentice with Local 12 Operating Engineers. Sounds very cool to me and something I wanted to do as a young man before I became a firefighter....
Heck, I'll only be 50 so I am going to do so homework and some networking and see if I can give it a go.

I hear you on adapting... it doesn't take me long but I haven't know what a real nights sleep is in years and probably won't for a few months after I retire and I process the dreams that so many of the retired guys talk about. We'll see.
Trials and joys.... the joys of being with my family are still there and I love it so getting more of that is my end goal.

Ramblin' enough?

Good to hear from ya patch... and that your alive and kicking ...

That apprenticeship sounds pretty good to me... young guy still in great shape ... and sticking together through thick and thin...

That's the way most all of us see it on a daily basis... thanks for sharing ...

It all helps IMHO .. again thanks.. and best wishes to you and yours.. and I'm sure it will work out ... your "unit" is strong...

I was faced with a simular delima at 54 years of age I opted to go into the trucking buisness.
The thing that became readialy apparent that my retirement income combined with my work income allowed me the freedom to do many things that would not have been possible if I had ground out my retirenent at my original job.

Thumbs up Re: Northgate market/Rolando

I will be heading to the union office next week and I will be starting some serious networking since I am a delegate to the San Diego/Imperial Counties Labor Council.
Love my like-minded union brothers.
Most people don't get it now. They will after a few more years of the new normal.
Saludos.

Somewhere deep down inside they do.

It's just that consciously acknowledging it and thinking about it is so scary and depressing, that denial and avoidance have become the national standard for dealing with it.

That, and the media studiously avoiding any direct emphasis on it. We are all left to grapple with it individually in isolation.

Who benefits?

DAMN SP, it sounds like you guys mighta been better off just staying down here!! Really sucky time you've had of it the past few months!

I don't gotta tell you that you're in a fairly unique position because of your age & the age of your little Patchettes. You've got at least 15+/- years of hands on parenting ahead of you, while most in your age group are kicking their fledglings out of the nest! I think it's awesome that you are so dedicated & family oriented!! I don't envy you having to sift through all the possibilities of what's best for you & the family over the long haul! But I do have faith that you'll make the smartest decisions for your family as a whole!!

You want to send those little Patchettes down, I'll teach them how to clean a pool! I'll even promise to work on getting my bird to learn to like the male of the species! Since my little feathered guy & your little guy are both redheads, I might be able to convince the bird there's a family connection! Sorry, but Seamus is too big for the Perra Porta!

Yes,
We have pondered what is going to be best for us AT LENGTH!!!!
We certainly never expected what occurred to happen...... that whole plan for the worst thing exceeded my expectations

Anyway,
We are getting the Mexico itch... it, in all reality, won't be satisfied probably until next June. We just have too many loose ends to tie up and by then our situation will be much more static.

Besides, I thought the old, burned out guy was supposed to retire with the cabana boy job!
