Cat snuck outside a few mornings ago and was exploring the desert for about 10 min before we realized she'd eloped. She was fine at the time I rounded her up, but later that night she didn't eat. She's eating a little now but is not her usual peppy self. Had her yearly vaccinations one week ago in the US with no sign of a reaction.
We had to pull a cactus spine out of her tongue once after she removed it from her foot and it got stuck on her tongue- wondering if it's something similar but we can't get her mouth open to visualize. It's been 3 days and she's not vomiting or listless like you'd expect if she'd eaten a toxic plant or lizard. We've had one La Paz vet experience that was "ok", and are looking for other options. Vet recommendations are appreciated. Who removed the grasshopper leg LLinLP? Would you go back? |

Don't know what could be going on with the cat, but I sent you Dr. Gabriel's info on bajanomad.
Don't know where you are, but there are good vets in Mulege and Loreto if you are closer to there. |

Ola, looks like majority rules....Dr. Gabriel @ Dogtor House is the doc who saved Bing's furry little butt after his traumatic head injury & the one who removed some weird stuff from his stomach, including, but not limited to, small rocks & the hard bony grasshopper leg during the same incident!! He's been Maggie & Jenny's vet for years!
I've e-mailed you the Google Earth map. Mi casa es su casa! |

Gabriel is the regular vet for my cats, but for more serious stuff like surgeries and more complex issues, his ex boss is second to none. He is located at Jalisco street, right about at the same street the policia municipal is.

Sounds like a reaction to something she ate or was stung by. The positive sign is that she is beginning to eat again. Maybe tempt her to open her mouth with a piece of tunafish???

Kiko has traveled, met a new vet, been poked, prodded & diagnosed! She's had an infection on her lip drained, gotten shots for pain & infection & started to get back to her old self relatively quickly. She's doing a follow-up visit with Dr. Gabriel this morning & then she & her brother & humans will be hitting Hwy 1 northbound & heading for home today.
Her human roommates will undoubtedly be doing their own update when they get back to a PC & signal, but I wanted to let everyone know it's a positive outcome & Kiko's on the rebound! ![]() |

Legz pretty much described up our trip. Kiko is back to her normal self...trying to open drawers and cabinets at 4:00 am, attacking feet under the covers at 4:30 and complaining that she wants to be fed at 5:00 a.m. She's back to normal.
Here's a copy of a post Ola made which sums up our experience: Follow up: We took the gato to Dr Gabriel (Meza) and are very happy with the care. Thorough assessment, and he arrived at a reasonable diagnosis and treatment plan that seems to have been successful. She had a fever and infection of some kind and is responding to the meds. Non-English-speaking professionals aren't usually a deal breaker for us, but it sure helps that we could relay the history to him in English and made it easier to understand the lab results and home instructions etc. His facility is clean and he's able to close off the exam area to reduce the noise and stress level for the animal. Not as important for dogs, but a big deal when you're bringing a sick cat to a vet where there can be lots of dogs running amuck. I would definitely recommend Dr Gabriel and his facility called "Dogtor House". Thanks to Mula, bajabass, and LLinLP for the referral. We did have a good experience at Blanco y Negro with Dr Irene last year with this same gato, but (at least the day we were there) it was noisy and sort of chaotic with lots of dogs and it added to the stress level for the cat. We weren't unhappy with the medical care at B y N, but appreciated that Dr Gabriel's place was more cat-mellow. Rather than deal with a hotel with the cats (or inconvenience friends), we decided to take our travel trailer and stayed at the Maranatha R.V. park. Park was very nice, showers had hot water and were very clean. There was some road noise, but not to a level that it was irritating. Good place to stay if you want to visit La Paz for a few days. Not much to do at the park though, and it's not close enough to the water to really enjoy the bay. Mostly just a nice place to spend the night. |
