OCWeekly did a review this past week of a taco stand in TJ called Tacos Kokopeli. One of the owner is a culinary school graduate and has worked at a 3 Michelin star restaurant. No money - so he started an out-of-this world taco stand.
Not sure how to post a link, but maybe someone can follow up with the review of the restaurant which includes the hours and location. I'm just going to say it was THE BEST FISH TACOS ever. But it's not your regular fish taco ala Ensenada (or wherever they started) Our group of three had: 'Black Harder" lenguado ceviched and then in squid ink served on a fire roasted tomato base and with avocados - Mild, tangy, with layers of flavor and very satisfying. 'Kraken' Hands down my favorite! Octopus cooked on the grill and then served with a "Baja pesto" made with chiles, garlic, olive oil and secret spices. hit that one with their serrano chile salsa. All the good things about octopus and none of the bad. California chile stuffed with poblano mushroom, wrapped in cheese in a tortilla with avocado. If you have anyone who doesn't like fish, just give them this and they'll be quiet for awhile. We tried it with their onions that they had pickled with chiles. California chile stuffed with camarones in a chimichurri cream sauce. My husband had some salsa with that and proclaimed it was his favorite. Camarones "mixeta" - cooked with different chiles and I think bell peppers plus black olives. My son had that with habenero sauce which was probably a little too spicy for the flavors. (Plus he was in agony afterwards) Plus we had aguas pepino and a couple of sodas. Total price was $190 pesos. DEFINITELY going again. They are only open Tues - Sat from 10 am to 4:30 pm. |

It looks like about $3.50 a taco US prices? Is that close? I really can't tell about the size but will one taco fill you up?
Thanks. |

The tacos are $20 pesos each. I think the chile relleno ones are more, but not much more. At the exchange today, I think that comes out to about $1.50 per each.
I had 1 1/2 and was stuffed. My husband had 3 1/2 and can't believe he had that many. But I don't think you can compare it to a regular taco place. This really is more like a quality restaurant, just served on the curb... |
