They say this as the PAN is presumably losing power? I don't get it.

Like him or not, Peña Nieto is making some very smart political moves as his inauguration nears. He has even managed to gain the support of AMLO's PRD party - so much so that Lopez Obrador has now abandoned the party and is forming a new one - the Morena Party.

Morena was not a political party during this last election. That was because political parties are prohibited from proselytizing during particular periods: Morena was able to proselytize because it was a citizens' group and not a political party. (!) There has been some talk about turning it into a party but it's hard to say where all that is going. There doesn't seem to be any tactical advantage in giving up its unfettered status. Why turn your queen into a king? I never thought I would ever run into "Peña Nieto" and "very smart" in the same sentence. Truly anything is possible. But he can still run against Gerald Ford, George W., and Vicente Fox to win the Who Da Dummest contest. As well as the meanest and most vindictive -- even beats Calderón on that score. I just hope he has more circumspect handlers than he did when he was governor or else we'll be in for one grim sexenio. |
