Default Sequestration could increase border waits to Five hours or more

Pegan recortes a garitas

I find it hard to believe the long Friday waits were caused by the Sequester already. But it is a reason for Mexico to lash out for the real failure of the US Gov't to make the worlds busiest land border crossing (San Ysidro) a better and faster experience. First the failure to budget for the southbound interstate alignment to El Chaparral, and now this.

I noticed in Rosarito Beach they have given up on re-paving the whole Blvd. Benito Juarez and now are doing patches. Either the plan was to only re-do the road section by the Rosarito Beach Hotel, or the pressure on Gustavo Torres to wrap this project up before Semana Santa won out and patching is the fastest solution. Perhaps Gustavo just wanted to make his dad's hotel entrance look nice.

Does any government have it totally together these days?

TIJUANA, Baja California (PH) - The effects of the budget cuts by the U.S. government were felt Friday in the Tijuana Customs department and the Otay commercial port of entry, with a change in the schedule and hours of operation. It is expected that the crossing of goods in both directions will be negatively affected.

In a statement issued by the Administrator of Customs in Tijuana, Luis Torres Torres, the Tax Administration Service (SAT) of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) reported that the cuts announced by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP, for its acronym in English) of the United States, went into effect this Friday.

The document, intended for users of foreign trade in the Tijuana Customs department indicates that CBP budget cuts will have an immediate and significant impact on operations.

Cool Re: Sequestration could increase border waits to Five hours or more

A massive pile of male bovine excrement heaped up by King Barry Hussein to try to scare all of us!!!

For Pete's sake! HE'S the Chief Executive of the United States and it's HIS responsibility to determine budget priorities and, when required by law, to report them to Congress.

So far, all he's done is campaign. He doesn't know how to do anything else.

If you don't like to wait in line, get SENTRI

100% true and helpful for expats. Not helpful for tourists and it's tourists Baja needs to cross the border to resuscitate the economy. Clearly the amount we expats contribute to the local economy isn't enough. This isn't really about our convenience, it's about their economics. Mexican tourists don't spend as much money. What Rosarito really needs is for "Spring Break" to return- but that's not likely.

On the upside, there is economic growth potential and money to be made for La Linea when the waits get this absurdly long. Creative entrepreneurs could get more money from tourists on their way back home...
1. Expand the drive-thru food court offerings to include appetizer/beverage carts in the first hour(gourmet coffee, aqua frescas, sodas, mariscos), entree carts in the second hour (carne asada, tacos, pizza, burritos) and desserts and carry-away options in the third hour (churros, frozen yogurt, rite aid ice cream). A full Baja dining experience the American way- from your car. Oh wait- it's all there already! (we just need to shuffle them around).
2. Create a Drive-and-Go bathroom service. If you're traveling alone- a person drives your car forward in line while you do your business. (see below)
3. Hong-Kong La Linea? Why not? A crew of bikini-clad ladies drives your car forward in line (so they can't hide anything) and you and your friends enjoy what the Zona Norte made TJ famous for.
4. Dental cleanings, Spa Treatments and Botox (surely with his face plastered all over La Linea, the famed Dr. Buenrostro could provide drive-thru service).
5.??

I think that you are on to something here.

In my pre-Sentri days I had a two hour wait and a car full of guys. One vendor/entreprenuer tries to sell us something (I forget what) and I ask him for a six pack of beer. Sure enough, he runs off and comes back 10 minutes later with ice cold beer. He asks us 'Anything else?' and when I say 'no' he repeats it; 'Anything?' 'no' 'ANYTHING?!?!' 'no thank you.' As we drank the beer I joked to my friends what if we'd asked for a woman? Then I thought, he probably could manage that, too.

Back in the mid 70's, I worked in LA and made the drive from Mission Viejo ...... about 3.5 - 4 hours on the 5 ..... in the evenings ... mornings I would get to work early by 6 to miss the traffic

Are the border lines going back north still as long as they were a few days back?

Nope. They're pretty much the same as before the "sequestration" as far as we can tell. Mid-morning weekdays the normal 90 minute wait in the ready lane at San Ysidro. Sometimes one side is faster than the other. They are still saying it could start to impact wait times, but don't make your "La Linea Dental" tooth bleaching appointments to kill a four-hour wait just yet.

Instead of cutting staff, would rather see them put those people out in the trenches.

If you are talking about stopping the drugs- that trench is now up in Chicago where Chapo Guzman is the #1 Crime Boss. If you are talking about stopping the flow of illegals north, what for? To process and welcome them to the USA? The latest trend is Mexicans crossing in groups and flagging down the BP agents to turn themselves in. They get processed with a court date and released. What a waste of manpower. If there is no political will, manpower won't help. JMHO.

=======================================================================

"Border Patrol union local 2544 in the Tucson sector reports that the influx of large groups of illegal aliens has begun crossing the Arizona border."

"We will continue to have large groups of illegal aliens chasing Border Patrol agents down so they can be “arrested”, knowing they will be set free and given temporary permission to remain here in the United States (no jail space to keep them locked up until their cases are adjudicated). Once they are set free with a “promise to appear” (wink, wink) 99% of them will disappear and never be heard from again unless they commit some heinous crime. Then, years down the road we will have a new group of politicians and activists screaming about how we need to “bring these people out of the shadows” by giving them amnesty. This is how the merry-go-round works. Proven time and time again over the span of many decades."

Thanks for nothing, Janet. You, OF ALL PEOPLE, as a former governor of Arizona, should know the impact of your foolish decisions on those who are charged to protect us along the border, and on those of us who live in southern Arizona!"

Should have said "putting them in the booths" instead of the "trenches"...

Yup. We need more men in booths for sure.
