Most sports and "lucky shot to win" promotions are insured. It used to cost $10,000 to insure a Million dollar prize. $20K a year won't make you rich (pre-tax) but it does ensure 50 years of annual fishing excursions for you and your heirs.

I wonder if prizes like that are transferable, if he wanted to sell it for cash or something. Personally I'd rather have the annuity, it's a nice boost to your income and won't have you spending on crazy things.

The full story that has been added states that the prize is transferable. There are also companies and individuals that purchase these long term contracts.

Yea those companies pay very little, but I bet he winds up selling it for something less than 100k.
