I question the information contained in this report and wonder what was the intent or motivation of the report.

A simple search indicates there are firearms manufacturers located in Mexico.....

Productos Mendoza: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Productos_Mendoza

Additionally, many firearms are made in Mexico for the military forces such as theMondragón F-08 and the FX-05 Xiuhcoatl.

Also made in Mexico under license are:
Heckler & Koch G3
Heckler & Koch HK33
Heckler & Koch MP5
Heckler & Koch P7
Heckler & Koch PSG1 Morelos Bicentenario
Heckler & Koch 21

I also question the numbers and statistics used as referenced against this article:

Mexicos Gun Supply and the 90 Percent Myth | Stratfor

I wonder how the authors of the original article/study are treating the weapons that come into Mexico along it's southern border and along it's largely unpatrolled coastline????.

Seems to me thare is a hidden agenda here.

Say, maybe it's the use of the word "Estimating" ....... would think that could give one some "wiggle room" ..........

Yes but Mexico has much tighter controls on the sale of arms. It is much easier to buy them north of the border and simply move them south...

Or move them from Central or South America into Mexico

They are even easier to buy north of the border and move into Mexico than from central America right now. The lower volume of vehicle traffic heading north bound into Mexico makes it much easier for Mexico to control and search the vehicle traffic. Could you imagine if Mexico were to stop and search EVERY vehicle heading south into Mexico???

In theory I like the idea but the reality of it will translate into 6 hour border crossing times going south bound...

The cartels don't seem to have any problems bringing the guns north into Mexico by road, boat or aircraft or getting guns from the Mexican military and/or the police....and don't even get me started on the South Korean hand grenades.....

Agreed - but believe me if we could somehow completely cutoff the arms heading south you would see a lot of gun shops/shows take a severe financial hit on the US side of the border. Neither you or I know exactly what the volume really is today...

I think in all of last year they caught two guns headed south into Mexico at San Ysidro. The new El Chaparral crossing is supposed to have state of the art detection for guns and money. For all the guns headed south, I haven't heard of them catching many yet. Must be other routes- like Tecate that have little or no test equipment.

(El Chaparral: After the 90 degree turn going down the temporary alley of death towards the inspection booths, there are a few houses and apartment buildings right up to the fence on the Mexico side. I saw a man sitting on his deck drinking a beer the last time I crossed. Just toss your gun up to him as you drive by. He should put his walkie-talkie number on a big sign with "Gun Import Service".)
