Confused Gas availability in Baja

Hi everyone,
Is finding gasoline a problem in Baja Norte and Baja Sur? I have been hearing that there is a stretch of about 200+ miles with no gas?
Is this true? My Harley won't make it 200+ miles....bummer.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as I am heading out this coming Monday..Cabo bound...with stops in Bahia de los Angeles, Bahia Asuncion. And curious to the gas situation.
Thank you in advance for your help!

From your other post, RE: Tecate

I am understanding that the longest stretch with gas is from Jesus Maria to Santa Rosalia, some 200+ miles. Is this true?

............Yes, also PEMEX stations in BOLA

is there barrel gas for sale?

............sometimes at Catavina

The Harley won't make the 200+ miles on a tank of gas.

........carry a 2 gallon container with you

Mexico 1 turnoff to Bahia Asuncion? And is there gas there?

..............yes and yes

YMMV

Thank you for the information. Wasn't wanting to carry gas, due to no room, but looks like I might have to.
Where is BOLA?
Again, thank you!

BOLA = Bahia de Los Angeles.....before you head to Baja, stop by the Auto Club office and pick up a Baja map

"I am understanding that the longest stretch with gas is from Jesus Maria to Santa Rosalia, some 200+ miles. Is this true?"

The 'dry stretch' is between EL ROSARIO and VILLA JESUS MARIA... and there is gas for sale from independent vendors at Cataviña (76 miles from El Rosario) and the Bahia de los Angeles junction (60 miles from Cataviña). As mentioned, there are Pemex stations at Bahia de los Angeles, 40 miles east on a paved side road... at a location you should see if you have not been before! The independent vendors sell gas from cans at about $1.50 a gallon over Pemex prices, however you do get a true amount as it is quite visual how much is in a 5 gallon can! The 'last' Pemex before the dry stretch (in El Rosario) does have honest pumps, so top off there, in any case! El Rosario is about 225 miles from the border.

Villa Jesus Maria to Santa Rosalia has many stations: Paralelo 28 (Eagle Monument/ State Border), Guerrero Negro, Vizcaino and San Ignacio.

BOLA is off the path so to speak, unless your destination is BOLA. It's a nice place to visit though. And one of the few places that has SCUBA diving facilities.

Dunno about on-line, although the Auto Club Baja California paper map has the stations marked pretty accurately. I try to never let my gauge get below 1/2 tank anywhere in Baja

How many gallons do you hold and how far will it take you?

There is usually daylight gas at Cativina and the turn off to Bay of LA. Bay of LA has 2 gas stations. Punta Prieta, Santa Rosalillita (10 Miles off the highway, paved),and Rosarito all have guys that sell gas out of 55s. You need to ask a local who sells gas in the town. I have purchased it in all of these towns in the last 10 years.

Something to think about, That is going to be a long, hot run, plan on staying in Bay of LA going and coming home. Baja is a harder ride then the US. It is 40 mile side trip, each way, cool place, IT'S A VACATION. If you see a guy with gas, do the math and make the call. Remember that next place might not have it.

I have been able to get gas every time I needed it in that area, not always on the day I wanted.
El Rosario to Cativina 65 miles
Cativina to turn off to bay of LA 80 miles
turn off to bay of LA to bay of LA 40 miles
turn off to bay of LA to Villa Jesus Maria 60 miles
V. Jesus Maria to Guerrero Negro 20 miles
Go have a great run!!

Is the station at Villa Jesus Maria just north of Guerrero Negro always open, or is it one of those that is frequently closed unexpectedly?

It has always been open when I arrived, but any Pemex station could run out or be closed... You have to ask around the village for other gas sources if you can't make the next station.

Awesome information!!
Thank you very much!

Tank holds 5 gallons, depending on how I ride, depends on the miles I can go. I will not be in any road race by any means. My first trip riding the Baja....kinda want to take it all in. Also, quality of gas has a lot to do with mileage as well. So, with that said, probably can get 150-200 from a tank.

From what I have been hearing, gas shouldn't be a problem. Just follow the rules from the ride I did from Key West Florida to Homer Alaska...never, ever pass up a gas station!!!

Is Bahia De Los Angeles to Loretto doable in an easy day?

Looking forward to the ride, meeting new friends, and for sure enjoying the food!! Ok...maybe a cervezza or 27 as well!

I have different numbers for the first two sections, basically add 10 to the first and subtract 20 from the second.

The quality is great for mileage, ie. no ethanol dilution in Mexican gasoline! 87 octane ('Magna') is common and 91 octane ('Premium') is not as widely sold.

L.A. Bay to Loreto (one T) is a one day ride, with an early start, and little time for sightseeing San Ignacio, Mulege, Bahia Concepcion... 380 miles. So, maybe not 'easy'... Casa Leree or Ignacio Springs are a couple popular, quiet places to stay in San Ignacio. Bob and Susan's Playa Frambes Lighthouse Resort is a taste of simple luxury on Bahia Concepcion if one of the motels in Mulege don't fit your bill of needs... There is so much Baja to see and experience... don't be in a hurry!

I agree to a great extent, but the Baja roads are not kind to a heavy road bike. The majority of bikes you see down here are dual sport's bikes the B M W being the most popular. as to the road conditions they are getting much better but they still have a long way to go. if you are totally against carrying gas in a can get you a plastic milk jug that's how the locals do it . the main thing is be safe and have fun.

Thank you for the info. I saw a lot of those and other duo-sports on the Alcan Highway in Alaska. This road worse than the Alcan?

I figured that out.

I have run PEMEX before, but not for this many miles. Octane booster will be my friend.

Going to do the sight seeing on the way back up the Baja.

Thank you for your input.

I think around 50% of the road is excellent ,wider lanes and paved shoulders the rest is a works in progress it has it's rough spots but nothing real bad. if you did the Alcan this will be a piece of cake.

I did the Alcan back in '10, most of it in the rain. So even if MX 1 is just as bad, at least it won't be in the rain, and I won't be riding it at night.
Thanks!
