Default Murders and robberies increase in Rosarito

Front page headline in todays El Sol de TIjuana newspaper. You would think the story here is the actual crime rate or homicide rate but it's not. No point in beating that dead horse- the Rosartio Beach rates are horrible. The speculation is about who will replace the current Police Chief Carlos Trenti. The full paper edition of El Sol says the new Mayor Silvano Macklis may bring back police Captain Montero, who is now the Baja State Security Secretary. IMHO that would be a good call. I've met him and trust him. Together with SIlvano it's the best chance to take back control.

on the bright side: the street makeover in the downtown tourist zone looks great; even a bike lane (yea, I know...)

Playas de Rosarito.- Ten years ago there were 1-1/2 vehicles stolen every day in Playas de Rosarito, now there are eight every day, criticized the mayor-elect, Silvano Abarca Macklis, who said he already has selected the next Director of the Municipal Police and he will be a person with experience and preparation, but he is still analyzing if there is a need or not for a Chief of Police with military experience, as it is necessary to "eliminate the connection with criminals," and stop the murders.

"The important thing is that we put all the experience of the police to work to stop two serious issues: eliminate the connections with criminals, and stop the murders and the vehicle thefts that hurt the people so much. Before there were 1-1/2 vehicle thefts per day, 10 years ago, and now eight are stolen per day. I think something is happening," he pointed out.

In an interview, the next mayor of Playas de Rosarito said he could not dismiss that they will have a military officer as chief of police, as it requires discipline and determination, but what is for sure is that an active duty municipal police officer, with experience and preparation, will be the person to occupy the office of police director.
