Hi,
I am very new to forums but want to introduce myself as suggested.:)
I am a 52 year young grandma that is coming South for a lot of rest, relaxation, and some great big change for a few months to possibly years.
I am interested in the outdoors, learning the language fluently and getting help where ever I end up living with my grandchildren and home that I do plan to rent. I am researching all the medical information and more.
I am retired from my past career but work part time from home off the net (email) and will need good internet and cheap phone service with the ability to call the SD area for free or cheap. Looking into Magic jack, Vonage, and maybe OOMA ?
I have contacted a few homeowners looking for long term rental prices and availability and found a couple places so far. Thank you in advance and any good advice is appreciated.

Hi Grandma. to TalkBaja. You're making us feel old already with that handle.

Aside from cheap phone/internet service your humble expectations are realistic. In Rosarito Beach we pay $1045 pesos a month for 10MB download speed and a Mexican phone line with unlimited Mexico and USA calls. For $9.99 a month we added Vonage USA voice line (no need to buy the World Plan for México). TelNor is reliable, cable modem service here gets mixed reviews. You may like the Guadalupe wine region area.

What area are you looking at - Tijuana / Rosarito / Ensenada?

Unless you have legal custody of your grandchildren, you might have a problem just hauling them over the border. At minimum you'll need a letter from the custodial parent(s) authorizing you to take them out of the country. I know that Teniente has grandchildren so hopefully he'll pop in here & be better able to address current legal requirements.

Wow! When I posted that first post I didn't think it really worked.
I am looking at Ensenada and Punta Banda area currently.
I spoke with one home owner's manager from VRBO that rents for a good price.

I am aware of the grandchildren issue, that wont be a problem. mom is AWOL and has no rights any longer.
I am looking for good schools to learn(or relearn Spanish) my college was in the 80's (Spanish class) and I pick it up fast when I have to. I am contacting the schools in the area and some offer teachers that come to you it seams which would help with the children since they are 2 and 4 now.
I need a great nanny/cook/housekeeper's and or more than 1 for our stay which may be for a month or.....? its up in the air currently.

I am disabled (not dead) just tired currently from a long hard career but I work part time from home using the internet and the phone so calling will be an issue if service goes down. We were told to use Vonage but looking into Magic Jack as well or OOMA?? I have internet fax service already.
Any other advice is greatly appreciated. I like a slower pace, fresh air and healthy living and some exercise for a change since I have a bigger family currently.
The children and my son have just returned to live with GMA so I love the Yahoo Punta Banda Group and all the great info and ideas. Getting Passports this week for the son and gkids.

Who is VRBO? And, what costs for which amenities are you referring too? Which area....neighborhood?

MJ works well with Telnor DSL.. Services here don't fail as often as in the past.

I really don't know which area but I use Punta Banda on the VRBO site and the number of the home was on this site address Punta Banda Vacation Rental - VRBO 283740 - 3 BR Baja California Norte House in Mexico, Spacious Villa on the Bay

We are looking for full time help at the home with the grandchildren and cooking/cleaning. The manage said she has lived in Baja for some time and that she does have contacts.
I wish I did know where this home was located but we don't. Some of you may recognize the managers name and the area when you view the site. I don't know where it is in Punta Banda. thank you for all the info. I am looking to retire completely in 5 years but can work there as long as there is phone service and internet.

What is the manager's name?
