Default Cartel members from Michoacán battle for Baja in the San Quintín valley

You know anything of this Ron?

SAN QUINTÍN.- A band of heavily armed subjects with AK-47 assault rifles, called "goat horns," apparently from Michoacán, had a gun battle yesterday afternoon near colonia La Candelaria, in the Camalú district, against ministerial police agents. After the gunfight, where it was necessary to call the municipal police, ministerial police and Mexican Army, they managed to stop the suspects. It appears there were six of them who could be linked to the last murders in this part of the city.

Unofficially, it is known that the gun battle between the police and the armed men in colonia La Candelaria, in the Camalú district, happened at approximately 5PM, in a ministerial police operation headed by commander José Luis Mena Jaloma. When the suspects were told to stop as they appeared suspicious, they accelerated instead, and when they were some distance away they started to shoot at the police.

The police called for help from the municipal police in the Camalú, Vicente Guerrero and San Quintín districts, and the night was painted with the sounds of police sirens. In the beginning, it was reported that kilometers up the road, with the help of all the police groups, they managed to arrest seven suspects.

Unofficially it is known that they seized AK-47's and a pistol from the armed men. Based on the actions of those arrested, an investigation was started immediately by the same public minister agent, and he was surrounded by patrol vehicles and Army all terrain vehicles to prevent any type of reprisals.

Hours later, almost as this edition was closing, it turned out that those arrested said they were originally from Michoacán and they were in the San Quintín valley to "clean-up" for the territory so they could take over the area. In addition, it was learned that the men confessed to having participated in two murders, although the authorities have said nothing regarding that.

Ron is aware of what is going on around him at all times and has strong community connections. His compound is as safe as you can make it and still be a home. He is def more prepared than the last time, but in that incident he left the safety of his home to help others.

The US Consul General for Baja California is a fan of Ron's and a member of this board. I would hope his office would give Ron (and all expats in the area) a heads-up if they were in imminent danger. I don't think this level of danger is addressed in the current State Department Travel Advisory so we have to hope it is an isolated cell of thugs and murderers talking like they are the big guys. Hope that's it.

"those arrested said they were originally from Michoacán and they were in the San Quintín valley to "clean-up" for the territory so they could take over the area."

I don't think the "War" is here yet and luckily these rural counties are rather large. I don't know what Mexico can do to get a handle of this and they haven't been able to do much about it on the mainland. I read today where a vigilante group is being formed in Mexicali to counter the corrupt police who are involved in kidnappings and extortion. If we get to the point where vigilante groups are forming in Baja and the cartels are moving up the coast to TJ- it won't be pretty.

link to vigilante group forming in Mexicali, the capital of Baja. This sign mentions La Paz as well:

http://www.afntijuana.info/informaci...icali#ver_nota

TIJUANA, BC, March 13, 2014 - Residents of Mexicali are calling for they say is the first "Self Defense Groups" in Baja California, that will be made up of a little more than 15,000 inhabitants of different colonias in the city of Mexicali, after pointing out the existence of police elements who are in collusion with criminal groups dedicated to extortion and kidnapping.

With the cry, "I am fed up with thieves and bad police!" these citizens are demanding more security and warn the Mexicali police chief he has one month, which is a result of the increase in the level of crimes they are suffering from.

In an interview via telephone, Manuel Valenzuela, 46 years old said he is the owner of dental offices in the area, and said that along with his neighbors, for the last two months he has been the victim of armed assaults as well as kidnapping threats, on repeated occasions. He said he has files complaints with the Municipal Police, however the ignore him.

Valenzuela said that for this reason he is motivated to create a self defense group, not only due to the crimes of criminals, but also because they are weary of the same municipal policemen who claim supposed infractions to extort them for money.

"The municipal police, instead of protecting the neighborhoods, only come in to extort drivers for infractions which were not committed, for 500 or 600 pesos (US$40 or US$50), and if one does not have money, they go with you to your home so they can get paid. Here and in China, this is called kidnapping," said the citizen.

In the same manner, he says this could be happening due to the implementation of the New Criminal Justice System, "with this system when somebody is arrested even though they can not prove anything, you are set free to taunt them."

The interviewed man said the self defense groups are organized -- according to what he said -- by the residents of the colonias Carvajal, Lázaro Cárdenas, Ejido Coahuila and Maestros Federales. They are passing out flyers and spreading information through the social networks since yesterday to get adherents.

Woooosh, my Espanol isn't all that great, but I read the bottom line of that sign to be saying "for the peace & security of Baja California".....as opposed to referring to the city of La Paz.

But to the main point of the post, that really sucks for the SQ area!

This scourge is new to Baja although we watched it coming from the mainland and up the Baja peninsula like a slow motion train wreck. The one thing we don't need to worry about is the cartels taking over the Missions this century.

Thanks Legs. I saw La Paz capitalized and too quickly took it at face value. I do worry that if vigilantes are needed to keep the peace in Baja and are allowed to form and be recognized as valid- it's a game changer. Hopefully these guys were just chest thumping once they got caught. They all do that. There are enough groups competing for control of Bajas routes and the Plaza.

It's about time. These citizens have finally had enough and are standing up for their neighborhoods and community. The best defense is a good offense......it's time to take the community & neighborhood back. Reminds me of the movie The Seven Samurai.

I dunno. The vigilante groups on the mainland are now infighting, killing each other and stealing the "spoils of war" the Knights Templar obtained. Once they got the upper hand they abused it. The Mexicali group seems to be focused on the police corruption impacting business owners. These vigilante groups are being formed to protect their fellow citizens and economic interests but the groups on the mainland eventually gravitated towards crime themselves. So who is left?

I only know what I witnessed in Rosarito. The new mayor Silvano admits it had the same problem the past three years (tolerated police involvment with drugs and corruption) under the previuos mayor and police chief (Robles/Trenti). There is no rehab program for the addictions of greed and power. We do hope for a strong and effective police force for Rosarito - but Montero says there are not enough "clean" candidates. We could hope other security forces (state police, military, etc) could fill that void- but they have shown themselves to be unreliable partners. My own nephew was tortured (waterboarded with a pail of dishwater) by the military last year while the police stood by and watched.

btw: The current Rosarito police chief (Montero) is a career mlitary man of honor and conviction. All eyes are on him. imho, if he can't make a difference- no one can. Right now he is trying to undo what the previous Police Chief did. My family has met with him regarding crime in our neighborhood and he gave us his personal cell number to call in the event we have a problem. He's a good man who cares about his Mexican and expat residents. For now we have decided to abandon our Baja home and live stateside, but we do hope to return to it. I feel the pressure on him to protect my family and expats in general is an unneccassary distraction for him while he gets things in order to protect his own people. I also think things are going to get much worse before they get better; but they will get better. jmho

Wars should be fought by the rich just as wealth should be a prerequisite for politicians.

Well here in Idaho the politicians just voted for a raise and also an automatic 2.5% increase every years but raised employees 1% over the last 4 years. They are trying to get rich.

In Idaho they have the potential for long political careers and then maybe become a lobbyist. Mexican politicians have single term careers, work for almost nothing, yet end up very well off rather quickly somehow. There is a saying in Mexico: "a poor politician is a poor politician". Old rich men still send their young men to fight their wars and make them more wealthy- just like the medieval Kings did.

Just today 2000 Mexicali families formed a civilain vigilante group to protect themselves- not the businessmen and their interests.. They captured 6 criminals their first day. Mexicali is the capital of Baja so what is the Mexican governments next step? Any guesses?

"You thief are not welcomed here, now you cannot steal, if you do watch for the consequences."

MEXICALI. - Tired of the crime in which the city has sunken into, a group of at least 2,000 families in colonias Lázaro Cárdenas, Carbajal, ex Ejido Coahuila and Maestros Federales formalized a "Civil Self Defense" movement, headed by social activist Juan Manuel Valenzuela.

In their first day of "operations", they reported the arrest of six presumed criminals.

In these areas they also placed banners on which they warn the municipal police and criminals that they are not welcome in those areas.

Sorry I missed this post - have been traveling and busy.

I did hear about the Camalu event. It is located about a 30-35 minute drive north of San Quintin and probably at least an hour drive from our place. Still, it was big news in our area.

Like Woooosh says - today we are much better prepared and united as a community out here on the beach. We all keep very much aware of what is going on around us.

As far as vigilante groups - they have existed to one degree or another here on the peninsula for a long time now. This region of Mexico is very much like the wild old west to some degree and at times, people down here don't bother calling the police but instead "take care" of the situation themselves.

It happens...

Let's see if the politicians are smart enough to smell the apple blossom's start to bloom?

The 1910 Mexican Revolution has been described as the first modern social revolution of the 20th century.

Maybe this will repeat and we will be witness to the first modern social revolution of the 21st century.

It is obvious that the people are fed up with the way things are going.
