Default Why Mexico?

We haven't moved to Baja yet, but are making preparations to take the plunge in the not-too-distant future. In this blog article, I try to take a stab at why.

Well, take a look here and see if that helps out.

Wink Re: Why Mexico?

Nice read. Hope all's going well.
Hey, if an active LAFD FF/PM with a little over 2 yrs. in the wake-up can be of assistance, give a holler. I'm just trying to scratch the surface of Mexico in Baja Norte and that's intimidating at times. Bueno suerte Bro-ham.

That's quite the adventure. There are days (most days, to be honest) when I would like to leave everything behind in a wildly impulsive moment, and I always envy and admire those who do. I particularly appreciate the O'Gradys blog for not sugar-coating the rough spots of the transition, as those are inevitable.

San Miguel de Allende is definitely on my must-visit list. I'm anxious to see how that works out.

My father was a police officer for 30 years in NY, and my brother just celebrated 25 years on the LAPD. The work was often extremely stressful, but they did get some generous vacation benefits. I've been in the IT world for 31 years. I only get 3 weeks, but have never been shot at or had to run into burning building. IMHO, first responders not only deserve all the time off they get, but also to retire young and enjoy healthy years of relaxation.

Thank you. Kind of you to say so.

Thank you,

I'll second that.

Just remember, if you live smart you can live for a lot less here.... if you are near a major airport that flies to where you need to work then you can balance a life for quite some time.... I know people who have been doing it for years.

Just remember, not all internet access is created equally here. Some areas, like Sayulita and San Pancho, have the worst access ever (10KB/minute upload speeds) and I have seen IT guys literally freak out due to the stress of not being able to work. Really.

It just depends on what you need to live.... the Quintano Roo is not inexpensive but beautiful and a short commute to the Right Coast.

Puerto Vallarta is an easy commute to the Left Coast.

Mexico City is not inexpensive but it has EVERYTHING.

Ensenada? Probably everything you need.

La Paz? It's all there but a bit warm in the summer.

San Jose del Cabo.... access to everything and still small and lots of empty rentals.

Xalapa... access to Veracruz and a university city.... and good coffee!

I can't speak to Oaxaca or Chiapis but Chiapis is very affordable according to my friends.

Think about your cost of living expenses, commuting and then how much income stream you can generate by doing so...... flights and cheaper housing and food vs. staying put and grinding it out.

Sometimes you just have to step off the edge and see..... we're still figuring it out!

However, that being said, we are living it and others are dreaming it........

We've been focusing our search in the Todos Santos area, an hour north of Cabo and an hour south of La Paz. WiFi seems to be fairly reliable, and yes, there seem to be plenty of available rentals big and small.

Currently I'm managing a group of DevOps Engineers at Constant Contact, although I've also been a deployment engineer and a UNIX Sys Admin in previous lives. Hard to believe I started out as a FORTRAN programmer over 30 years ago.
