Re: Our Construction Thread...
Not surprising people respond when they're treated with genuine respect and appreciation.
What is surprising is that so many think they come out ahead by not behaving/thinking in that manner. |

Second story roof pour today. Already an hour and a half into it, those guys aren't so clean looking anymore. Check the scaffolding.

Re: Our Construction Thread...
And this from the guy who fully intended to try to make his workers used little red mushroom-shaped rebar safety caps? Welcome to the world of reality....Mexican style! Sometimes it a toss-up between being amazed at the ingenuity....or being scared to watch! None of those guys look the slightest nervous to me!

Re: Our Construction Thread...
I don't think it is that sketchy; as long as you have complete confidence in *that one angled member. Each individual landing only supports a guy(or two) and his load.
For sure admire the ingenuity. It's a pretty elegant solution using those materials. *On closer scrutiny, check out the splice on the one we can see... Double yikes! Maybe it's just insurance on a slight check in the wood, rather than holding two separate pieces together. |

Re: Our Construction Thread...
I was just kidding about the "dark ages". We were really excited when we found out that a company had a pumper truck in Loreto. It was a fairly recent happening when we built. We are also remote, but not as far out as you guys. We are a few miles North of the town on a dirt road with no services (elect, water etc.) and that's just about right for us. Nearest neighbor is about 1 km away. We just finished up our construction process a few months ago and glad that is over. Although I can say that we had the greatest construction crew and everything came out perfectly with few it any issues.
Woo, your place is looking great and I'm sure you'll really enjoy it when you get moved in. . |

Re: Our Construction Thread...
WOW, one tough job... punking up 5's of concrete .... by the way, what was the temp the day they poured... just a guy that used to do construction when very young... and I still remember working in heat well about 110º ... it's not a lot of fun... and slows a job down... somewhat
These guys look pretty good still... a little dirty but.. .looking good... Your crew deserves a fiesta upon completion .... Hell of a job... working with "old tools" .. Your "back and arms"........ Have stopped many a time to watch guys work SOB... they work in rather different labor conditions than most NOB... big time... a credit to "men"... who "get er done"..... Thanks for the pic's... some great shots... of your place and what's going on... really do enjoy all ya folks getting the chance to live out a dream... thanks for sharing to all ... again..

Re: Our Construction Thread...
The scaffolding was pretty amazing. There were 16 guys total. The head mason put out the word that workers should show up at 7:00 a.m. Guys started showing up at 6:15 to claim their positions before it was even light out!. He had to turn away about 5 or 6 guys.
It was actually a perfect day to pour. Overcast, light breeze and only about 84 degrees. We cleaned out the local taco stand, and bought most of the Ballenas in stock at our closest cerveceria. It was pretty fun after. |

Re: Our Construction Thread...
Congrats on your progress. Everything looks great It gives me hope that one day WE might be able to do something like that.
I've been down to my casita in SADM only twice this summer. Once with the wife, another time alone. Still praying for a miracle she'll come around to my way of thinking. But I'm not holding my breath. Hey, it's all good & they're people a lot worse off. Again, really enjoy your updates. Continued success. |
