Default Our introduction to Talk Baja

Hola to everyone. My wife and I moved to Cancun, Mx. at the end of 2007 when we retired. We love to explore different places in Mexico. We found this site from a posting by Baja Gringo on the MexConnect forum. We have been following your home build and really have enjoyed all your pictures and experiences so far. We have undertaken several building projects on our property in Cancun, and we enjoy the comparisons. We love Mexico and the Mexican people. It's been all good so far................
We also enjoy this forum because it gives us a insiders view of a different part of Mexico, so we hope you don't mind a "outsider" gaining some knowledge about Baja? 8-)

Hola cancun Tom!

Can we see some photos of where you live ? I'm sure I'll be envious of the white sandy beaches, and turquoise water.

Sure, I'll be happy to post a few. Look for them tomorrow as I've got a few irons in today's fire and won't have time, but you can count on it. Thanks for asking!

No such thing as an outsider here, Tom. We're all in the same boat. Welcome to TalkBaja.
Most expats I know have to go back to the states on occasion. If you also do, how does it work from the long distance? [ I'm assuming you're U.S. ]

We have never gone back so far. We arrived on Jan.26th 2008 after driving here from Chicago. We sold our home in Chi-town, all our belongings, and bought a beautiful home in Cancun. We did the "Full Monty" thing, no looking back............we're here to stay. We both retired from our jobs so we don't have to work. We didn't want to enter retirement and just do and see the same old things. We wanted as Monty Python said "and Now.........for something completely different". So since we are both scuba divers and love the water and climate, this was the place for us. We also believe in the following...................Life is NOT a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming " Holy shit, what a ride!!!"

Actually, it make you look like one VERY happy camper. Congrats on following your dream.

In your earlier post, you said,

We wanted as Monty Python said "and Now.........for something completely different".

How well we understand. We have moved and changed our lives several times and now it is the only reason we have considered selling our Baja Home---just to move on to something new and different----another adventure.

The only time we have been in Cancun was back in 1991 when we arrived downtown by bus. We then walked out to the strand---had no idea how far it was! We took the bus back to town. From there, it was a bus to Belize--- a lot different back then.

We loved Merida and still do, but the last time we drove through there in 1999, we were surprised as to how much it has grown----still a wonderful city.

From the smile on your face, it looks like you have NEVER looked back! That is GREAT

Welcome to the sane Baja forum.

Diane

Were those guys with you or did you just happen upon them? That's a fun picture and makes a great avatar. The scarlet color is so vivid. The birds seemed out of place the few times i've had the pleasure of seeing them in the wild. They certainly don't blend in to their surroundings. and then there's that earsplitting squawking.

The one on your head is plotting something ; on your right, he's going to nibble on your ear. The guy on your left has plans for the camera person.

You'd never know you came from Chicago. You're mingling nicely with the local fauna.
