Default Unsafe Driving???

Does anyone know if there is a number to call to report an unsafe driver here? ie, excessive speeding and running cars off the road?

Sorry, I don't...but I'm sure if there was one, you'd be in the Voice Response Unit queue for a looooooong time. (sorry, noproblemo, couldn't resist)

The problem is this guy is an American, alone in his 80's with hepititus C final stages and still insists upon driving, very badly at that. Trying to keep someone from getting hurt or worse as one of my neighbors was nearly yesterday. Also, he has already been reported in the states.

Here's twenty five centavos of ideas for what they are worth to keep the poor, but dangerous soul off the road.
If he has family that are capable of policing him, ask for their support in your concern that he is a danger to himself and others....Maybe they will take his keys away?
Can a group of volunteers rotate offering to chauffeur him?
Your word "insistence" suggests that it may be difficult to reason with him...if it really is a life threatening situation, as a last resort I would evaluate ways to temporarily disable the auto until he accepts the limitations to his abilities and desires to dispose of it.

Problems with him are
car is kept in garage, he's a loner with no family, who drinks and drives, on top of his meds, has run off all "friends" which could have helped, and we are at a loss. He refuses to accept his limitations as he does not see them, hence our thinking that "if" there is someone we could call to force intervention it may save someone.

Prevention through law enforcement is tough. See if your local police can or are willing to do anything. Absent that, the most obvious way to reduce/e/eliminate the risk is to remove the car from the equation. I'd find a way to make that happen, but I'm a bit of a hell-raiser.

I know of a similar situation near where I live. Challenging to deal with, I know. Good luck, no problemo, IMHO you're a good person to want to take acton instead of passively doing the que sera thing.

I can identify; recently had to intervene with another senior.

It's a combination of denial, desire to remain independent, and a rather-selfish disregard for others. Rather than concede and make plans for a day when they cannot care for themselves, their effective policy on the matter is "that day will never come."

I'd hire offer to cover expenses for local law enforcement.

This just in from the La Paz Yahoo email group:

"My Mexican driver's license expires next week so this morning I attended at Transito for a renewal. New rule ... if you are 60 years of age or more you must also submit with your documents a doctor's certificate that you are medically fit to drive."

Ouch!! But if such a regulation gets implemented up north, it could take the 80-something Mercedes guy off the road.

I had to do that.. but I was classified as blind.. I did not think it should make any difference... I felt discriminated against... and won

So now I'm driving again.. yell at me when I go by... might not see you

And you will know it's me... people will be hanging off my running boards.. and there is usually a lot of stuff stuck to my bumper and in the grill..

I go slow.. so I don't hit anyone... they are able to get out of the way.. and I try and use sidewalks as much as possible to let the other drivers use the road

Have fun, I do...
