AP - Former President Vicente Fox is joining with those urging his successor to legalize drugs in Mexico, saying that could break the economic power of the country's brutal drug cartels.

Ain't that the truth.

The real laugh is probably 90% will get all worked up one way or another pondering as if it were altruistic principle at work...

rather than personal principal.

If drugs were legal in Mexico but illegal in the U.S., I wonder what would happen.

Yes but most dopers would not, so how would "business" work. I.e., what would change about drugs from Mexico being sold to Americans in the US?

I think it would just take the cartels back to business as usual; as in the pre-Calderon days. That is good for Mexico and I suspect will make little difference to the drug use rates NOB.

But I have been wrong once or twice before...

Maybe so, but since it would be legal in Mexico, I'd think that clashes between cartels might be on a different basis? E.g., would they still be territorial?

I think it would just go back to how business was done before, with government assigning the territories and collecting the royalties and protection revenue. In the pre-Calderon days they stayed off the front page; hesitant to bite the hand that fed them. It was just bad business and that is what kept the peace for the most part in Mexico.

That is how it works in most of the world. Some of it even under the eye of the US military in some remote parts where we have a "tactical interest". This really is nothing new...

Did someone say, "hypocrisy"? Not much different that supporting leaders and regimes that would outwardly appear inimical to our interests.

But if it were legal to own and sell in Mexico, so that anybody could sell without breaking any (Mexican) laws, it seems to me sales to the US could not so easily be controlled.

It would certainly be a boost to tourism. I really am not convinced that Mexico would be so bold as to legalize drugs. Especially since they've had a long standing opportunity to legalize full- blown casino gambling, and have not. Just picture the idea that people could fly to Cabo or Cancun, stay at top notch resorts, and both gamble and do drugs. It would appear to solve Mexico's budget dilemma.

Teniente- I don't do drugs. But I do support the legalization of some drugs for a number of reasons. Just wonder what the dif is between your Southwest pilots smoking a bowl and swilling tequila is? There is reliable testing for both. Perhaps they need to step up the program.

I'd way prefer a stoned skipper than a drunk one.

How about those poor bastards pulled out of line by DHS 'cuz they were griping about having to surrender their morning coffees? They had a big night out that included a lot of booze, but had dinner along with it.

Nothing like that Northwest crew quite a few years back who were observed tanking it up in the barand then heading for the flight line. Flew a leg hammered, and were busted at the destination. Skipper is now a Senior Instructor for them after earning his credentials back.

And we haven't even gotten started on prescription drugs. You know, those "legal" drugs that folks like Rush Limbaugh do...

Hell That's what ya got right now....

They must be taking or doing something at Southwest...

They made that reality TV show with them .... what a crew they got there at the desks and in baggage .. can only imagine what they are doing behind the "luggage".. OH the horror !!!

Heck they got autopilot nowadays anyway... think its time for a little more Kirkland kicapoo joy juice..

Been down on a couple at John Wayne and walked away Air Cal in 81 and my favorite... Air West.. we got down, without crashing.. but one engine that was still working was on fire.. .... when we got to Catilina to make the right turn to head to Sac, lost the left engine .. and then oil warning lights and alarms started on the second engine as we were coming back to John Wayne .. I was going, oh please don't go down in this ocean ..... then as soon as we got over all those buildings .. OH, please down go down here.!! .. ... and they (the plane and piolt) were supposdely ok..... they brought us in real fast and we got down ... nothing fancy.. just get it on the ground!!

With Air West I was taking a short ride to Fresno for a guys retirement in one of those small jobs, was in 88 or 89 it seems, they asked if I still wanted to go... as they had another plane that was "ready"...

I prefer not to fly anymore.. I know "its safer than"... but, figured three strikes and your out... another reason I left the position which I had, along with my "personality trait" which tends to drive most insane... plus a few years in Air Traffic Control kinda helps too

Oh, one last thing ... of course you know we have certification for truck drivers, drug testing, plus the PULL programs.. and all those other good things in place.. so we can just to the same for the Airlines and others...

Now why in the world would you be worried...

Thanks I needed that... as California DMV has deceided that I need another smog check before they will renew my tags... the swine.. it was just done four months ago, when I purchased the vehicle from a dealer in Sacramento !!!!! ... and yes I have already checked with them... "there's a policy" .... I told them I used to work for the State of California.. the lady said your lucky.. I still have to and they are going to pay us with 'funny money".. and we have to work with no overtime... the swine... no sympathy at all...

Come on there Bajaguy .... what's another 7 or 8 years.. hell shoot for 75, they might give you a gold watch too...

And of course this is way off topic... and a bit convoluted...
