Default Thunderstorms

These were yesterday. This evening is completely overcast, looks like a cell may be coming over us in a while. Of course... I did a bunch of painting today

There is just something about the powerful beauty of incoming weather fronts that captivate us. They really do fascinate me...

The pics are beautiful. I've had too many bad experiences to have fascination or entrallment.
Those don't look too bad; the top forming on the one would have me unplugging everything.

Hey, Wooo,
I hope you don't mind that I post about a thunderstorm up here a couple weeks ago. I posted this in the chile pepper grow log but I know a lot of folks don't peruse the Off-Topics on a regular basis. I know it's not in Baja, and I'll delete it if you want,

It's some pretty incredible footage taken with a Kodak digital camera, not a video camera. Hope folks enjoy (?) it~

The hum in the background is from the a/c unit we were standing right next to. Watch for the double lightening strike at 1:06, and then sheets of rain blowing sideways.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sLt5fdJuI4

Here's a couple screen shots of the still frame of the strikes-

And here's the view over the garage the next morning, so you can see how close the hills are behind the garage. The lightening struck somewhere between our house and the hill. Also notice you can't even see the hill because of the rain.

Even with the wild weather, the peppers weathered the storm fine, didn't loose any of them.

That's a little CLOSE in the first photo! I've tried so many times to catch lightning with no luck. One day I'll get lucky. Thank goodness for digital photography and the delete key. I've taken a lot of useless photos.

It was an all night display.
I might add I did not take the photo above.
I scanned it from the front page of a local news paper.

Dang Nuts that smaller one came awfully close...That said, I love to watch the lightening storms. Ya just never know if one is going to get you or not even if you sit inside of your garage watching it.

Yes David, it was all around and we didn't realize how close it was until I was working with the video and started to do a frame-by-frame to get he shot.

Right before this (unbeknown to me) Nuts0.5 was running around out in the yard, rescuing a tarp on his fort. I made sure that he and his friend that was standing on the porch when the storm was going on got a GOOD LOOK and a good talking to about not being out in a storm.

I remember the 2 thunder cracks of these 2 strikes, and I remember one from my childhood when I was inside a house. These were not NEARLY as loud as the one I remember from then or have heard here in eastern WA at other times. It didn't seem to do any damage to the truck where it hit the ladder bracket.

That shot of Ensenada is pretty cool also.

Hey - now that we are on the subject of lightning, remember how they taught us in school that lightning originates from the ground? (or was that just my sub-standard school in Long Beach?)

I watched a Discovery Channel program the other night that refutes that.

OK, now you can all go back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Well, dang!! Next thing you know, they'll be telling us not to hide under the desk in the event of a nuclear attack.

I experienced a big one while visiting my mom in Ohio a few years back. Big flash with an unbelievably loud boom, and everybody's garage doors started going up and down. I'd just plugged in my laptop and ran to unplug it. The battery had fully charged in an instant from just that one bolt of lightning!!

I unplug a lot. Got an e-mail from a friend in Connecticut, last week. Their house was hit big time.
Fried a little over half the wiring and all things connected thereto, Which unfortunately were all the electronics in their offices and all their major appliances. I've been in some dillies back there, but first time I heard of that happening. It can be nasty.
