2 Marines, 2 Passengers Die in Mexicali Crash

MEXICALI, Mexico — Two Camp Pendleton Marines were killed early Friday in a solo car accident in Mexicali, military officials said.

Two unidentified civilian women with them also died.

A preliminary accident report indicated that the driver of the vehicle lost control and went over a bridge around 3 a.m., said 2nd Lt. Joseph Reney, a Camp Pendleton spokesman. The report did not specify which Marine was driving, he said.

Killed in the crash were Lance Cpl. Julio C. Galvan, 21, of Maywood, Ill., and Pfc. Isidro I. Godinez, 19, of Calexico, Marine officials said.

Both men were automotive diesel mechanics who served in the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Galvan enlisted in June 2008 and Godinez enlisted in March 2008.

A third unidentified Marine from Yuma was injured, officials said. A message left with the Yuma base public affairs office was not immediately returned.
