Default New to forum - trying to decide where in Baja?

Ok I'm new here so I appologize if this is not posted in exactly the right place. My wife and our two children are exploring the idea of living part time or full time in baja, on the gulf side. We are looking into mulage or loreto as an option but are open to suggestions. We are looking for other families with children, we have a two year old and a four year old and two dogs. I am 27 and Emily is 29. Any information on schools or other people with kids would be greatly appreciated. Emily has traveled extensively in baja and both of us have spent a great deal of time on the mainland. We love nature, the gulf, birds, kayaking, snorkeling, photography, art and a myriad of other things. I'm also looking to study aikido and or tai chi, or another form if any one knows of a good teacher in something else.
Quite an extensive post... Um yep that's about it
Thanks
James

Howdy James and welcome to the forum. There is no simple answer to your question and it probably would help if we knew a little more:

Will you be working down here? Is your family fluent in Spanish? Will your children be taught in local schools or home-schooled? Might be good for you guys to get to know our forum member soulpatch. he is planning a similar move with younger kids down to Baja very soon and together you can probably learn a lot more about where exactly you want to end up.

I do recommend you spend much more time in the place you think you would like to live... and do so in the time most try and leave (July-Sept.). Both Mulege and Loreto are tropical, get hurricanes, have both high heat and high humidity in the summer.

You will not have any of the conveniences and services, hospital care, etc. that you might be used to in the U.S.. Maybe okay for adults, but you have children, and they need to be the #1 priority.

If you can adapt and learn to live, eat, and survive as the locals do... then the only thing remaining is to be accepted by the locals. Again, spending significant time in the new area getting to know the people you will someday be dealing with regularly will greatly improve your odds of making it.

Hopefully you are wealthy, as the government of Mexico does things to protect its citizens, such as not allowing foreignors to work in Mexico unless they can prove they offer something that a local cannot and that they get a work visa... often requiring a sponsor.

Remember, you are in another country, and there are planty of immigration rules and loops to jump through to avoid being deported or lose any property you try to keep in Mexico.

Baja Gringo is an expert, as he is there... I know Soulpatch as well... I only dream of being in Baja full time... my heart is there, but my wallet is empty! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress...

There is a vast difference between Mulege and Loreto. I love them both. But Loreto has more amenities available as it has a much larger population base. There's an almost new hospital, and, of course, the international airport in the event one needs to return to the states quickly. On the other hand, Mulege, due to its smaller size has a decidely small town vibe.

I have family that lived in Muleje and their daughter went to school there You would not belive the barriers the system put up. We had to get diplomas from grade school and Jr. high which we did they turned them down because the werent noterised we complied and they turned them down becaused the notary seal wasnt a raised seal. to make a long story shorter she finished school with honors but never recived ofical credit after all that Muleje has an attractoin.
