Is anybody subscribing to this service or something similar that is willing to give their opinion?

A friend looked at their services a couple of years ago and said that they appeared to be quite pricey. Not sure if that has changed - curious to find out...

We have this insurance: http://www.medjetassist.com/

The reasons we chose Med Jet Assist was that they will transport to any facility you want to go to, not just the "nearest appropriate medical facility". Our other deciding factor was that we used to travel to Nicaragua, and Skymed didn't go there.

I'd contact Barbara Vandenburg in Loreto for more Skymed information: http://www.skymed.com/Loreto

Another option is Aero Guerrero Negro (615) 157 0132, 0137. Not insurance, but if you call they will come almost immediately and fly you to the border. They can put gurneys in the plane. Shari has a post on Nomad about them: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthre...8397#pid558048

We are also members of this organization: http://binationalemergency.org/

They have all our insurance information and if something happens, they will make all the necessary medical and insurance contacts, and organize/coordinate transport back to the U.S. for medical care. They're not insurance, they just get the ball rolling then make sure all the customs and exit procedures are handled to expedite crossing the border back to the U.S. for treatment.

SkyMed "takes you HOME" U. S. A. or Canada, not the nearest facitity and we cover 32 countries. I have been a SkyMed Rep. in Loreto for over 3 years and have many members. For an individual it is $222.00 a year and $444.00 a year for a family ($60.00 application fee) for up to 6 months coverage in Mexico.... and that is very inexpensive for the services we provide. Please go to skymed.com/loreto for information on becoming a member or e-mail me at skymedlorteo@gmail.com and I will be happy to answer your questions. Regards, Barbara Vandenberg

One thing that I always wondered about programs like this - is it flat rate or is it cheaper if you live closer to the border?

The memberships are for single ($222.00 a year) or family (kids ups to 18 and 24 if still full time in school) ($444.00 a year) with a $60.00 application fee.
The Traditional Membership is for up to 6 months coverage in Mexico and 32 countries.
The NATO Membership is for more than 6 months coverage in Mexico and covers you year round in Mexico and in 32 countries. Yes, it is VERY REASONABLE. We have air evacuated many members in Baja and especially Loreto where I live as we have an international airport and jets can land, refuel, and get maintainance services.
We now have a monthly installment plan which includes ALL our OPTIONS.
Please e-mail me at skymedloreto@gmail.com if you have any questions or go to my site Skymed.com/loreto and there is a question and answer section to help you decide if you need SkyMed. Regards, Barbara Vandenberg

Do the subscribers to the service have to take care of getting themselves to an airport (for those living in remote locations)?

Yes, but one of the OPTIONS is SkyMed pays for the Ambulance to get you to an international airport from a hospital or clinic, then from the airport (of your choosing) in U.S. or Canada to the hospital in U.S. or Canada. SkyMed can cover all the bases...you have to decide what YOU want SkyMed to cover. Regards, Barbara

What is "the OC"? I've seen it but have no idea what it means.
I have heard of the Ukraine, at least.

Having lived in "THE OC" most of my life, for some reason that one really irritated me.
