Here are some great photos I hadn't seen before of Ensenada. The first one was taken in 1910 at the inauguration of the monument to Hidalgo, in celebration of the first centennial. The other four are from around 1930 and include an aerial view of the city, a downtown shot taken at Avenida Ruiz and Calle Primera and the last two of the Hotel Playa - now the Centro Cultural Riviera. The first one was taken during construction...

Great pictures BG, love the outfits at the Hidalgo monument inauguration. Those must have been great times in Ensenada!

Fantastic photos, thanks! As for the diagonal parking system, maybe it was a way of "curbing the wheels" so that the cars didn't roll? So many are parked that way that it has to be more than just sloppiness.

even today you see cars parked with a big rock behind the wheel perfect logic to me. I grew up in west Texas and the street scenes remind me of how it was in Texas when i was a boy, good memories. |

I'm a bit surprised to see paved streets dating back to the 30s. My earliest memories of Ensenada date back to the late 60's and I just seem to remember few paved streets in those days. Or maybe it was more about where I hung out???

Was it pavement or volcanic gravel?

Gawd! I cannot recall with total accuracy. But there are a couple of photos you posted that are clearly pavement.
