Default Tropical Storm Dora, soon to be Hurricane Dora

This is predicted to be a major hurricane & current forecasts plot it off the tip of Baja by the end of the week. The current forecast models are predicting it possibly coming as far to the east as La Paz or farther to the west which would have lower risk of major impact for those of us in the southern part of Baja. So keep an eye on your favorite weather site.

Tropical Storm Dora Nears Hurricane Level

By Lananh Nguyen and Charlotte Porter | Bloomberg
Jul 19, 2011 8:16 AM GMT-0700

Tropical Storm Dora strengthened to in the eastern Pacific and is forecast to become a hurricane today, while Bret weakened in the Atlantic on a course out to sea, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Dora, about 395 miles (636 kilometers) south of Acapulco, Mexico, had sustained winds of 70 mph as of 11 a.m. East Coast time, the Miami-based center said in an advisory. Dora is expected to become a major hurricane, then weaken before brushing past the southwestern tip of the Baja Peninsula.

Dora’s storm-force winds extend outward as far as 125 miles, the center said. “Life-threatening” surf swells are expected to affect the coast of southwestern Mexico today as the storm moves west-northwest at 15 mph.

Bret, the second tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, weakened as it moved northeast away from the Bahamas, the center said in a separate advisory. The system is forecast to diminish during the next 48 hours.

Bret was about 365 miles south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and was moving north-northeast at 8 mph, with sustained winds of 50 mph.

“Bret is expected to remain well offshore of the southeastern coast of the United States,” the center said.

A disturbance becomes a named storm when sustained winds reach 39 mph. A storm reaches hurricane status when winds increase to 74 mph, and reached major storm level when winds hit 111 mph.

Here downtown we had the clouds but just a few drops of rain, barely enough to wet the patio. About the same this morning.

I'm no meteorologist, But as I look at the graphic that Ron posted earlier today, I would guess that the current weather conditions around La Paz are not related to the potential Hurricane Dora. Just a different tropical wave.

That said, I really hope that Dora doesn't become a problem to Baja.

Default Hurricane Dora strengthens off Mexico Pacific coast

Hurricane Dora strengthens off Mexico Pacific coast

Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:33am GMT
Reuters

MEXICO CITY, July 20 (Reuters) - Hurricane Dora strengthened in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico on Wednesday and may become a major storm later in the day as it moves parallel to the coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Dora, the fourth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, had top sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph) and was 225 miles (360 km) south-southwest of the resort town of Acapulco, the Miami-based hurricane center said in its 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT) advisory.

Dora was moving west-northwest near 18 mph (30 kph) and was set to brush the tip of the Baja California peninsula by Saturday.

"The center of Dora is expected to move nearly parallel to the coast of southwestern Mexico over the next couple of days," the hurricane center said.

Dora was a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity and "could become a major hurricane by Wednesday," forecasters said.

Mexico has no major oil installations on its Pacific coast, but sugar- and coffee-growing cropland could be soaked by the storm.

^^^ Old news....current sustained winds of 105 MPH.....as of 11 AM.

But predicted path is also slipping back to the west, so as pleasant as your dreams are, all that water could just remain inside your noggin!

As of 8 AM, Dora had reached 155 MPH maximum sustained windspeed....Cat 4 = 131-155MPH, Cat 5 = 156+

While the path was officially moved slightly to "the right" towards the Peninsula this morning, all forecasts are still predicting she'll stay to the left of the Peninsula. But is Dora listening to the predictions??

Difficult to control a strong woman. However, unless she heads straight for and up the SOC promptly, she is gonig to get a "cold shower" that will weaken her, and possibly knock the wind out of her very quickly.

If she sheds a few tears on us out of her weakened condition....would be nice.

If Dora decides to make a hard turn to starboard, we are all going to get wet.
