Large swells predicted for Baja peninsula coastline

Thursday July 21, 2011

MIAMI (UPI) -- Hurricane Dora intensified Thursday as the storm moved in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico's western seaboard, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Dora, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, was about 265 miles south of Cabo Corrientes and about 500 miles south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, traveling northwest at 13 mph, the center said in its 5 a.m. advisory.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

The Category 4 hurricane was expected to grow stronger during the next 12 hours before beginning to weaken Friday, the center said.

Dora was expected to generate large swells affecting the Baja California peninsula Thursday, the center said. Hurricane-generated swells, which could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, also could affect southern and southwestern Mexico for the next few days.
