Businessmen who fled Tijuana over insecurity now returning

Entrepreneurs who fled to the United States over fear for their personal safety face a changing panorama and must now make an important decision, said the president of the local Chamber of Commerce (CANACO), Chalita Karim Rodriguez IV.

"Many have already opted to return to Tijuana as the city now breaths a peaceful air, yet it remains an evolving climate. Those returning now tell us that California remains bogged down in a poor economic state while Tijuana is almost entirely the opposite. Fortunately we are experiencing here a gradual yet dynamic recovery, "said Rodriguez Chalita IV.

He said that seven out of ten entrepreneurs who have returned were unable to keep business investments north of the border economically afloat, or they had to "semi-abandon" them to keep their families intact.

Another big problem they had to face was keeping up with their U.S. mortgages, said the president of CANACO.

He explained that many of those who have not returned are in an economic position where they could establish themselves permanently working on the other side of the border.

Chalita Karim expressed his concern over a new monetary crisis in California, not only because of the direct economic downfall but over fear of a possible increase in crime.
